South Point posts season win totals for ever College Football team

South Point is first sports book to post totals on every team. 

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time ever in Nevada sports book history, regular season win totals have been posted on all 128 Division I college football teams. And to make the unprecedented move even more astounding is that it's only May with the first kickoff not occurring until August 27.

The architect of the early numbers is veteran bookmaker Chris Andrews who took over as South Point sports book director in February. He's been hammering away at all the info he can gather on every school since taking over.

"I start compiling everything for all the teams right after the Super Bowl," said Andrews, a Pittsburgh native who has ran Nevada books for 37 years. "I track down what I can get for every school with the local papers and school web sites, and for a few teams the info is pretty hard to come by."

Two weeks ago the South Point was the first in Nevada to post spreads for the first week of college football action and also offered 40 'Games of the Year' numbers for the marquee match-ups. On Thursday he unleashed win totals on every school and offered some insight to key components in his oddsmaking process.

"When I do my ratings for each team, I always lean heavily on the offensive line with returning starters," he said. "I'm a big believer that stability in the offensive line is key for teams performing well early in the schedule. I don't have a math model, but I certainly have a methodology to produce the team ratings and win totals I'm comfortable with."

He's taking a dime on the Power-5 conference teams and a nickel on the other schools.

More Madness than ever at Vegas books

The first March Madness weekend in Las Vegas is always the busiest four-day stretch the sports books will see all season, but the 2016 version took things up a few notches that surprised even the most veteran bookmakers across the city.

"It was unbelievably busy,"said MGM Resorts sports book hub manager Jeff Stoneback.

"Every year you think it can't be any busier, but it was a sight I've never seen in my 30 years in the business. The crowds were incredible, and our action reflected the growth with ticket counts being up 30 percent on Wednesday before the tournament and then up 20 percent over the same Thursday through Sunday last year. We had lines backed up all the way past California Pizza Kitchen (inside Mirage) at 9 am with only one game starting within the hour on Saturday."

The busy Saturday morning was a continuation from what happened Friday night, when bettors did extremely well on the late results with Notre Dame covering -3 against Michigan and Northern Iowa winning outright as a 4.5-point underdog against Texas.

"We ran out of money Friday," said Stoneback regarding the non-stop payouts. "We had to get two cash fills from the cage, so when Saturday morning came around, bettors were really gung ho about the upcoming games."

The most surprising thing thing about the MGM books having so much additional action is that they didn't offer in-progress wagering or phone wagering like many of the other books in town, who also said handle was way up.

"Handle way up, win down," said William Hill's bookmaking director Nick Bogdanovich. "The first day was good, but the other three were a battle."

It was the same story at Station Casinos 19 books across the city.

Las Vegas sports books do March Madness Prepatory

South Point sports book and casino will be hopping next week.

Las Vegas sports books get a nice dress rehearsal this week with the college basketball conference tournaments in preparation for next weekends NCAA Tournament, which might be the most stressful four consecutive days the book staff experiences during the entire year.

"It's certainly more challenging than the Super Bowl," said Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay. "It's the weekend where I tip my hat to all the ticket writers around town who feel the brunt of the pressure right up close, non-stop for 10 or 12 hours a day, four straight days."

Having dozens of games to work with each day through this weekend -- one after another just like next week -- gives the entire staff some practice so the onslaught of bettors next weekend isn't so overwhelming.

The pressure felt to get every wager taken in is felt from the ticket writer to the line supervisor to the bookmaker and then the director. It's a chain reaction and the books that do the best at this process are quite noticeable. The SuperBook is one of those.

"We have a veteran staff -- it's not their first time around, but it's still good to get acclimated a bit for the rush we'll see next week,' said Kornegay.

Communication with the staff and other departments is a big part of his process to be ready for next week.

Alabama or Clemson? Selection from Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- There’s no question Alabama is the higher rated team in Monday’s national title game against Clemson, but is that rating gap really worth 6.5 points? According to Las Vegas oddsmaker Kenny White, the gap between the two teams is about half that number.

“Alabama’s played the better schedule in the SEC,” said White, “and Alabama’s the better team with the far better defense, but with the recent big wins by Clemson the disparity between the two closed to the point where, Alabama is rated only 3-points better (5-points better prior to ACC Championship). At the beginning of the season, the differential was 9-points.”

The added inflation to the number is sort of a luxury tax because sports books know the majority of the action will come on Alabama. Most books opened Alabama -7 just to see if they’d get some feelers taking the points, and some sharps did, which caused many to move to -7 (EVEN) or -6.5. William Hill’s 104 sports books across Nevada have taken 71 percent of the tickets written on Alabama, as well as 61 percent of the overall cash taken in.
