South Point posts season win totals for ever College Football team

South Point is first sports book to post totals on every team.
LAS VEGAS -- For the first time ever in Nevada sports book history, regular season win totals have been posted on all 128 Division I college football teams. And to make the unprecedented move even more astounding is that it's only May with the first kickoff not occurring until August 27.

The architect of the early numbers is veteran bookmaker Chris Andrews who took over as South Point sports book director in February. He's been hammering away at all the info he can gather on every school since taking over.

"I start compiling everything for all the teams right after the Super Bowl," said Andrews, a Pittsburgh native who has ran Nevada books for 37 years. "I track down what I can get for every school with the local papers and school web sites, and for a few teams the info is pretty hard to come by."

Two weeks ago the South Point was the first in Nevada to post spreads for the first week of college football action and also offered 40 'Games of the Year' numbers for the marquee match-ups. On Thursday he unleashed win totals on every school and offered some insight to key components in his oddsmaking process.

"When I do my ratings for each team, I always lean heavily on the offensive line with returning starters," he said. "I'm a big believer that stability in the offensive line is key for teams performing well early in the schedule. I don't have a math model, but I certainly have a methodology to produce the team ratings and win totals I'm comfortable with."

He's taking a dime on the Power-5 conference teams and a nickel on the other schools.

Alabama or Clemson? Selection from Las Vegas

Las Vegas a fun place to watch championship games. Intense crowds.
LAS VEGAS -- There’s no question Alabama is the higher rated team in Monday’s national title game against Clemson, but is that rating gap really worth 6.5 points? According to Las Vegas oddsmaker Kenny White, the gap between the two teams is about half that number.

“Alabama’s played the better schedule in the SEC,” said White, “and Alabama’s the better team with the far better defense, but with the recent big wins by Clemson the disparity between the two closed to the point where, Alabama is rated only 3-points better (5-points better prior to ACC Championship). At the beginning of the season, the differential was 9-points.”

The added inflation to the number is sort of a luxury tax because sports books know the majority of the action will come on Alabama. Most books opened Alabama -7 just to see if they’d get some feelers taking the points, and some sharps did, which caused many to move to -7 (EVEN) or -6.5. William Hill’s 104 sports books across Nevada have taken 71 percent of the tickets written on Alabama, as well as 61 percent of the overall cash taken in.

Free Week 5 College Football Selections: Roll Tide between Hedges

Alabama and Georgia last met in 2012 SEC Title game.
Line: Georgia -2, Total: 54.5
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Will Alabama really start SEC play at 0-2 for the first time since 1990?

Nick Saban has recruited better than anyone over the past few seasons, yet still can't manage to get a top-flight quarterback into the program, which cost them dearly against Ole Miss. The field-goal kicking game has also been struggling. However, what they do well is control the ground game, and they should be able to neutralize Georgia running back Nick Chubb and put all the pressure on QB Greyson Lambert, who has looked outstanding thus far, but against opponents not nearly as good as Alabama.

Alabama is an underdog for the first time in 72 games, but calling Georgia the favorite is subjective and based on how big a home-field edge you give the Bulldogs between the hedges. There's a big difference between home-field value against South Carolina and against Alabama. When the Tide rolls into town, cut their opponents’ home rating in half. So while you might give Georgia +6 at home against South Carolina, the advantage may be only +2 to +3 against Alabama. And we have Alabama rated about 4-points better than Georgia on a neutral field, so by this logic, Alabama should be -1 on Saturday.

Look for the line to drop, so if you're on board with Alabama, get all you can on the money-line as soon as possible.

Predicted score: Alabama 38-24

Week 3 College Football Picks: Alabama rolls Ole Miss in revenge spot

You don't get many opportunities to lay Alabama at -7 or less at home, and you don't get many opportunities to back Nick Saban in a revenge spot. When Mississippi comes to Tuscaloosa this weekend, we get both.

Beyond those reasons to support Alabama, power ratings further the case. The spread suggests the Rebels and Crimson Tide are playing at a neutral site and does not factor Alabama's huge home edge, which might be the biggest in college football.

Ole Miss is a quality squad, and QB Chad Kelly might be a good one, but we can hardly make that assumption based on his play against Tennessee-Martin and Fresno State, despite the Rebels scoring over 73 points in each. This is Alabama's defense at home, and it's Kelly's first road game.

Look for the Ole Miss defense to play well enough to keep this game UNDER the total, but for Alabama to win by double digits and cover the number. Alabama -6.5 and UNDER 53.5.

Predicted score: Alabama 27-10

Alabama BCS Title Game Win not So Good For Las Vegas Sports Books

by Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

The combination of lingering parlay cards cashing on Alabama from the last four weeks of action and the day-of small action on Alabama made the 37-21 Crimson Tide win over Texas in the BCS Title game a tough day for the Las Vegas Books.

Even though there were plenty of large wagers on Texas, most books were still rooting for the Long Horns because of the extended risk created by the public’s majority perception.

Most of the Las Vegas Sports Books had up to five different weeks of parlay cards that had to be posted within the system all at once Thursday night and the results were not pretty.

“Every week, people were throwing in Alabama or Texas at the end of their parlays and if they hit their first few games the payouts with Alabama winning payout at odds of 11 to 1, 20 to 1 and higher. We would have lost with either Alabama or Texas,” said Coast Resorts Director of Race and Sports Bob Scucci.

Those kind of odds couldn’t be made up even with the meaty futures win that were posted on Alabama which traditionally have an expected hold of around 35%.

Ticket count ratios were reported at 5/1 and higher for the game on Alabama. Combine that loss with the extended risk on the cards, and wagers made on the day of -- most of which always take the favorite and over regardless of who is playing -- and it makes for a bad Thursday night in the Vegas Books.

For a brief moment, there appeared to a game changing moment regarding the spread when Texas scored late in the fourth quarter making it 24-19 with the extra-point pending. Some in the public, with Alabama tickets, were actually looking for Texas to kick the extra point. There were a few that were able to lay the 3.5, but most laid either 4 or 4.5-points.

It’s funny how some in the public think and root for things to happen that will never occur. What’s even funnier is that people like that actually bet on the game and have no football sense whatsoever. This is, of course, the same person who had Alabama and over parlayed, so who’s smart now?

Anyway, Texas did go for two -- and got it -- and you could hear a collective moan from the Sports Book crowd and a silent fist pump in unison by bookmakers across the Valley.

Well, you know how the rest went. A 24-21 game late in the fourth quarter, with the under 46 still winning, quickly turned into a 37-21 Alabama and over win.

College Football Notebook: Oregon Ducks Might Be Best Team in The Nation

by Micah Roberts
Gaming Today Las Vegas

USC is latest victim; is it Bama’s turn?

Sound the sirens, we have a possible upset alert in Tuscaloosa this week. No. 3 ranked Alabama welcomes No. 9 LSU this Saturday in what could be the Crimson Tide’s last major hurdle in an attempt to make the SEC Championship game undefeated to play Florida.

Every week, a top-10 team has fallen. Last week we said good-bye to USC. Could Alabama be that team this week? Of all the top-10 teams playing this week, Alabama would be the most logical choice.

LSU’s only loss of the season was against Florida and their offense has been much more impressive in their two wins since that loss. Two weeks ago they beat Auburn 31-10, a team who came back a week later and beat a ranked Ole Miss squad. Last week they had a tune-up against Tulane and won 42-0.

Alabama should be afraid. Not only is its hopes of a national title on the line, but if they lose to LSU, they won’t even get to play Florida for the SEC Title should LSU win out.

Alabama has four games remaining in the regular season, but has been struggling down the stretch. Their near loss to Tennessee two weeks ago was another unimpressive win that contributed to them dropping from No. 2 to third this week without even playing.

Should Alabama get by LSU, the rejuvenated Auburn Tigers may have something for them in the Iron Bowl played Thanksgiving weekend.

Taps for USC

USC no longer has to complain about playing in the Rose Bowl as they have in years past because their reign as Pac-10 Champs is over following Oregon’s 47-20 blasting of the Trojans Saturday night. It was USC’s worst defeat since 1997 and their first loss by more than seven since 2001, Pete Carroll’s first year as head coach.

What’s really surprising is that the public jumped off the wagon before it fell off the cliff. Las Vegas is usually a very pro-Trojan crowd that has generally bet them in big games during Carroll’s remarkable run. USC just doesn’t lose too many big games, but couldn’t find many takers Saturday, who all seemed to be correct.

"We couldn’t get any action on USC," said Lucky’s Sports Book Director Jimmy Vaccaro. "Oregon was one of our bigger losers on Saturday."

Vaccaro said they even dropped the USC money line all the way to -125 because of little action on USC and most of the Oregon money coming in on the plus money straight-up side. Usually a 3-point favorite is anywhere from -150 to -160 on the conversion chart.

Holy Masoli

Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli threw for 222 yards and a touchdown and ran for 164 more and a TD in Ducks Fright Night trick-or-treat special over USC.

"I don’t know if we made a statement, this is just what we planned on doing," Masoli said. "If it makes a statement it makes a statement. That’s just Oregon football and how we roll."

It may be a little too late in the BCS rankings for No. 8 ranked Oregon to have a chance at the Title game, but since losing to Boise State in their first game of the season, not many have looked better than Oregon. Whoever wins the Big-10 can expect to be double-digit underdogs in the Rose Bowl to Oregon.

Books do well on Saturday

The monthly fall trend of casinos being able to rely on the Sports Book’s College Football win contributing to the overall scheme continued in week 9. The mix of action and indecisiveness of the small money players on the marquee games has kept them guessing all year. Teams like Florida, Texas and Alabama, who are on TV every week, are all undefeated and popular weekly plays, but have been the most unpredictable of all against the spread.

Middle of the Week

Many folks are skeptical about believing in No. 4 Iowa and it showed right away at the betting window last week when Iowa opened up an 18.5-point home favorite to Indiana. Why shouldn’t everyone question that many points? The Hawkeyes have only one convincing win all season which was in week 2 against Iowa State where they won by 32.

Every one of their seven other games this season had been won by 11 points or less. In their last four games they had barely hung on needing fantastic finishes to win, so it wasn’t surprising to see the first few large bets come in on Indiana taking the points.

The line settled at 17.5-points for all the weekend plays which is when most of the smaller money comes in, and in most cases, they like to play the favorites.

Indiana looked like they were not only going to cover, but get the straight-up win; they took a 21-7 half-time lead.

The Hoosiers still had the lead going into the fourth quarter at 24-14, and then the tidal wave came. Iowa made big play after big play for a 28-0 run to close out the game giving Iowa a 42-24 win with a margin of 18 points, right in the middle of where the move went, meaning the books got beat on both sides of the spectrum. Sharp money won with the early wagers and the small money won with their weekend wagers.

Moves of the Week

Mississippi opened a 3-point road favorite at Auburn and by kickoff the game had moved to 6-points. Auburn ended up winning the game outright 33-20.

No surprise to find a MAC game getting early movement, which it did Monday when the Toledo/Western Michigan matchup came out at Pick and because of who bet it, was quickly bumped to -2 and then -2.5 where it closed. Toledo cruised to an easy 26-14 win over Western Michigan.

Penn State was one of the moves that happened later in the week. They opened a 14.5-point favorite and was bet small early and finally closed at 17. Northwestern gave them a battle for the three quarters but couldn’t hang on, giving up the possible win and cover, losing 34-13.
