Ravens-Steelers Thursday Night Selection: Vick starting is huge factor

Will Steelers tone down offensive playbook for Michael Vick?
The storylines are obvious when one of the NFL’s fiercest rivalries continues Thursday night (8:25 p.m. ET, CBS, NFLN). The Ravens, who had aspirations of another Super Bowl coming into the season, are 0-3 for the first time in franchise history. The Steelers have won two in a row since losing the season-opener at New England, but will have to rely on Michael Vick with starting QB Ben Roethlisberger out 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.

Line: Baltimore -2.5, Total: 44

Line movement: How big is the move from Roethlisberger to Vick? Pitt was a 3.5-point favorite when the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook posted this game a week in advance. After Sunday’s Week 3 action, the Ravens opened -2.5 at most Vegas books and have been bet to -3 (even) at some venues. The total has hovered around 44 and 44.5.

NFL Wild Card Weekend Betting Moves at Las Vegas Sports Books

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Twenty NFL teams are finished for the year, four are waiting for an opponent while on a bye week and eight slug it out to advance this weekend. It’s Wild Card week of the playoffs, a portion of the playoffs that is much unlike the divisional and championship rounds because the short underdogs have major value.

Upon the Las Vegas sportsbooks opening the lines, the Sharps sided with all of the underdogs with three of the four all getting three points. Much of the attraction has to do strictly with the value of “3” this season, a margin of victory that has landed 47 times this season totaling 18.5% of all games. It’s the highest total seen in the league for some time. Consider that just two years ago, only 28 games (10.5%) landed on this short margin.

The other factor is just how well short ‘dogs have done in this round. Since 1978, teams getting 1 to 3 points in the Wild Card round have gone 26-16-2 against the spread. And, home underdogs have gone a combined 11-3 in all Wild Card contests. The low spreads success rate may indicate that maybe too much respect is being given to the home team where the value is generally worth 3 to 3 ½ points in the rating.

Last year, the books had all four games hovering from minus-1 to minus-4 with all the home teams favored. One of the games, the Packers at Arizona, moved six points by kickoff with the Packers ending up being favored by 3-points. Three of the underdogs won outright, including Arizona, with only Dallas covering as a favorite.

This season we have a monster favorite like never seen before from a road team in the Wild Card. The Saints opened as 10-point favorites over Seattle and were quickly bet up to minus-10 ½, but it’s been two-way action since with the line hopping back and forth between the two numbers over at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book.

This game against the 7-9 Seahawks fits the Saints profile perfect as they have beaten only two teams this season that had winning records. They beat the Seahawks in Week 11 as an 11-point favorite 34-19 at home, but along the way have fell into lapses like losing to Cleveland, Arizona and nearly losing to the Panthers.

Seattle meanwhile comes in with a solid conservative effort in a must-win game against the Rams with backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst leading the way for only their second win in their last seven played. The team they beat over that span was the Panthers. This week, however, Seattle will be going back with Matt Hasselbeck, who engineered many of those losses despite Whitehurst being a bit more mobile.

The first two large bets in the Jets-Colts games were on the Jets getting plus-3 and then plus-3 (-125) before settling at Colts minus-2 ½. The Jets were in the same position last season in this round at Cincinnati and won outright. They then won at San Diego as large 7-point underdogs before losing 30-17 at Indianapolis in the AFC Championship game as 7 ½-point underdogs.

During the second half of the season, Peyton Manning just hasn’t looked like himself throwing 15 of his 17 interceptions from Week 9 on. Part of that has been getting used to life without targets Dallas Clark and Austin Collie. The other part has been an injury riddled running back corps. Running back Joseph Addai and the gang are back and probably healthier than ever right now, but Collie and Clark remain out.

Who would have ever thought there would be a time when Manning was quarterbacking at home during the playoffs where we could lay a field goal or perhaps less at kickoff?

There were some early plays on the Chiefs as Sharps were playing the value of the number and home underdog trends, but after going to Ravens minus-2 ½, money came in on the Ravens pushing the number back to minus-3. It’s been teetering back and forth ever since going from even money to flat with more Chiefs money.

These are two teams that are playing well at the moment with the Chiefs winning five of their last seven while the Ravens have won six of their last seven. The Ravens are riding high right now and have been one of the better road playoff teams in recent playoff history. The Chiefs come limping in after getting destroyed by the Raiders in Week 17. True, it was a meaningless game, but come on, it was the hated Raiders. The timing of Charlie Weiss announcing he was going to make a lateral move as offensive coordinator for Florida sure sounds like a correlation for their flat play last week.

The game of the week, or at least sexiest, is Green Bay visiting Philadelphia for a Week 1 rematch where the whole Michael Vick re-birth began after linebacker Clay Matthews knocked then starting QB Kevin Kolb out of the game. The Packers won 27-20, but not before Vick gave us glimpse of what was about to do this season. Vick had the Packers defense off balance in the second half.

The Eagles opened minus-3 (EVEN) and Packers money came in dropping the line to minus- 2 ½ (-120). Most of the Las Vegas sportsbooks have the game at either 2 ½ flat or money tied to it, but the Hilton and Mirage both have the Eagles at minus-3 (EVEN).

I still haven’t decided who I’m going to take in these games as a case can be made for all, but I have to have at least some kind of action on them. You can’t just watch a football game with nothing riding on it. Fantasy football is over, so I can’t even resort to that. My first instinct is to take the Ravens who are basically the road warriors in the playoffs. However, the home underdog stat has me doubting the pick. My other instincts say take the Saints, Packers and Jets, but I could probably be talked out of each game.

As for the public and early ticket counts, it’s all on the Ravens, Packers, Saints and Colts, in that order. The early week plays are usually a good indicator of what the overall public consensus is. However, about 95% of the action for these games will come Friday night through Sunday. The Packers late game Sunday will be a tough spot for the sportsbooks, who will have all that weighted play parlayed into the final game, even if two of the other three games turn out well for them.

Super Bowl Futures
For those looking to play futures to win the Super Bowl or Conferences, my advice is to just bet the money line on the team all the way, rolling the money over weekly. In some cases, it’s not as easy for people to get bets down weekly which is why they take the set future odds as a matter of convenience. But for those looking to get maximum value on your team, taking the set price almost never equals out to what a certain team would pay if just rolling the money over weekly. Do the math on potential matchups in each conference and you’ll see that rolling the money over is the best way to increase your bankroll and value.

Should the set price then be greater than what the math shows, then that should be the only time to bet a Super Bowl future. But that rarely happens because most sports books build in a 20% or higher theoretical hold for this round of 12 teams that always gives the edge to the house. There are some instances where books will inflate certain teams to attract action due to liability from the course of the season, but it still rarely goes beyond the true odds.

The fairest future odds in Las Vegas for all sports with low hold percentages are always at the Hilton, M Resort & Spa and Lucky’s.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: Stay Away From Most Ravens-Steelers Players This Week

By Micah Roberts
Las Vegas Review-Journal

The Ravens-Steelers game arguably is the biggest NFL game of Week 4, but fantasy football players shouldn't expect it to produce big numbers.

This matchup appears to feature far more subplots than expected offensive gains, which is why Las Vegas sports books posted it with the lowest total of the week, at 34½.

Matching Baltimore's top-rated defense against Pittsburgh's sixth-ranked unit figures to produce a low-scoring game. Someone has to score, though, and, while running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Ray Rice and wide receiver Anquan Boldin generally are must-starts, the top fantasy earners in this game could be kickers Billy Cundiff and Jeff Reed.

Mendenhall has rushed for 332 yards in three games for the Steelers (3-0). For all the credit the Steelers defense has been given as the key to their success without suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Mendenhall often is lost in the shuffle.

Mendenhall provides one of many storylines in the bruising series between the two teams. He texted Rice just before his first career start during Week 4 of the 2008 season and predicted he'd have a big game. Ray Lewis and the Ravens defense took offense to the rookie's boisterous nature, and, on his 10th carry, Lewis hit Mendenhall hard, breaking his shoulder and ending his season.

In last season's two meetings, Mendenhall produced a 95-yard effort in a loss and a 36-yard game with a touchdown in a win. He might feel more confident after seeing how Cleveland running back Peyton Hillis pounded out 144 yards rushing and a score against the Ravens in Week 3.

Rice comes in with a banged-up knee. The Steelers are not the type of team someone who is aching wants to face. Rice has been a disappointment this year, producing 275 total yards and no touchdowns. But he is the only running back in 37 games to rush for 100 yards against the Steelers, which happened the last time they played.

Much of Rice's drop in production has been because of the Ravens' new commitment to the pass with Boldin, who exploded in Week 3 with a three-touchdown day. Even though quarterback Joe Flacco is not a good fantasy start this week, Boldin's ability makes him dangerous against anyone.

Joining Flacco on the list of players in this matchup to proceed with caution are wide receivers Mike Wallace, Hines Ward and Derrick Mason and tight end Todd Heap. And, with Rice hurting, it might be a good idea to pick up backup Ravens running back Willis McGahee.

Here's a look at some other potentially available players who could be good for Week 4 and beyond:
■ BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, Patriots: With Fred Taylor still questionable and Kevin Faulk out for the season, Green-Ellis takes over the load of the ground game for a good offensive team.
■ Peyton Hillis, RB, Browns: He no longer is under the radar after last week's performance.
■ Louis Murphy, WR, Raiders: He had 11 receptions and 210 yards in the past two games and, for the season, has been a better earner than both Steve Smiths, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson.
■ Ryan Torain, RB, Redskins: He is a Mike Shanahan favorite who he drafted while at Denver and always believed could be a feature back in his offense. Torain got the bulk of Washington's second-half carries last week, finishing with 46 yards on seven attempts.

■ BYE WEEKS -- Dallas, Kansas City, Minnesota and Tampa Bay.

Roberts Week 16 Pro Football Selections: Ravens Keep Steelers Reelin'

Ravens +3 @ Pittsburgh: So this is supposed to be the week the Steelers put it all together in their playoff run. After losing five games in a row -- and barely beating the Packers to end the streak -- they think they can flip on the switch and play better when the chips are down? Well, the chips have been down for quite a while in losses to Cleveland, Kansas City, and Oakland -- three of the worst teams in the league. The Ravens, meanwhile, come in feeling good offensively and defensively. They are playing as well as they have all season with Joe Flacco showing signs of last seasons rookie that led the Ravens to the conference title game. Two teams going in different directions right now and I'll take the one going the right way which is Baltimore.

Baltimore/Pittsburgh OVER 42: It appears that the Steelers can't stop anyone with Troy Polamalu out -- as he will be this week again -- and they have to resort to throwing non-stop just to keep up with teams now. The Steelers are no longer a running team and can't grind clock out as they always have in the traditional sense. They throw now out of need, because their always down, as they will be this week.

Dolphins -1.5 vs Texans: Chad Henne has really come into his own this season and has this team in position for a possible playoff spot without running much of the wildcat offense anymore. The Texans are looking for the playoffs too, but could have taken care of business too many times this season to not have them in this position. They can blame Kris Brown all they want for losing games with missed kicks, but the Texans should have handled their business before making the kicker seal their fate. Look for Ricky Williams to have a big day with Henne doing just enough to beat Houston.

Packers -14 vs Seahawks: Not a big fan of laying two touchdowns in any game, but the Seahawks have shown that they have thrown in the towel. Seattle is coming off of two terrible offensive showings at Houston and worst of all, at home to the 1-12 Buccaneers. Had Seattle been hindered by having offensive weapons out such as their starting quarterback, that may have gave them a pass, but Matt Hasselbeck played both of those games with no intensity. They just want to see the season end, find a GM, and get ready for 2010 while the Packers will give Seattle's defense a steady dose of Ryan Grant.

NFL Picks: Mike T's Week 2 Dogs

by Mike T.

The first few weeks of the season I always look for some value underdogs. Although I went 1-2 last week there were still a few dogs that got there that I only wish I would have taken. Let's see what I can do this week.

Teams like the Jets, Bears, and Seahawks are all possible dogs to get there this week but I'm staying away from them for the most part. ( I may stick them in a parlay but that's about it)

Ravens +3 1/2 over Chargers
By now most of us know that LT is banged up already and will not play. That is not the only reason to go against SD. Offensive linemen Nick Hardwick(ankle) and Louis Vasquez (knee) have not practiced this week. The Raiders held this SD running attack to 87 yds on 23 carries. That was with 2 healthy starting linemen. Now SD has to play a much better Raven D and a Raven O that is also much better than Oakland.
Ravens 20 Chargers 10

Saints +1 over Eagles
Not only is McNabb doubtful with a broken rib but (T) Shaun Andrews is also out for the year. Andrews will be replaced with turn-style Winston justice. If the Saints sent multiple looks at Justice, Kevin Kolb could be in for a long day while trying to keep up with the high powered Saints offense. I think we'll see the Saints go up early and never look back.
Saints 24 Eagles 14

Giants +3 over Dallas
The first thing that stands out to me is the line. The home team -3 is the same as a pick'em on a neutral field. This line seems a little off to me, it should probably be Dallas +1. Odds makers can hang this number because they know they will get plenty of action on the Cowboys. This being a big division game and the fact that Dallas is opening their new stadium on Sunday night is enough to make this line a boring 3. The Cowboys offense put up 34 points on TB last week including 3 bombs while holding the Bucs to just 10. This week however, the Cowboys are not playing the Bucs. The Bucs rushed for 174 yds against the Boys but abandoned the run once they fell behind. The Giants have a better O Line and better backs and I doubt they give up on the run game even if they are down a score or two. The Giants D Line will also pressure Romo a lot more than the Bucs did and should bring their run game to a halt.

One more thing, teams playing their first game in a new stadium are 7-6 straight up and 5-8 against the spread since 1997.
Giants 27 Cowboys 16
