Las Vegas Sports Book Betting Notes; Packers favored to Win Super Bowl

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

With the two number one seeds eliminated and only four teams left, the sentimental choice to win the Super Bowl now is the sixth seeded Green Bay Packers led by their rising star, Aaron Rodgers. Of course, fans from the other three teams would disagree, but fans of other teams who have been eliminated can’t help but root for the quarterback who has created his own niche on a team that was so long associated by Brett Favre.

It’s hard not to root for Rodgers just from the aspect of how tough of a situation he was put in three years ago when the whole Favre soap opera started. Rodgers didn’t say much and just played the game, while Favre’s true nature became apparent to all in his final year.

We’ve seen glimpses of greatness out of Rodgers in the past, but nothing like what we saw last week on the stage of the playoffs where he completed 31 of 36 passes for 336 yards and 3 touchdowns in Atlanta. At times, while he was dodging defenders in the pocket and feeling pressure with eyes in the back of his head, scrambling around, I thought I was watching Roger Staubach back there, another quarterback who wore number 12.

The Las Vegas sportsbooks don’t get caught up in sentiment, but rather cold hard facts when creating their lines, yet they too have been greatly swayed by the impressive Packers in their last two games. It was surprising enough when the Packers were a short 1-point underdog at the top seeded Falcons, but this week they are 3 ½-point favorites on the road at Chicago for the NFC Championship game.

The Packers have been placed as the 8-to-5 favorite (Bet $100 to win $160) to win the Super Bowl at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book despite a higher seed such as the Steelers (2/1) still active. The Hilton’s Jeff Sherman believes the Packers would be a pick’em against the Steelers and minus-2 ½ against the Jets, but also said that the line would drastically change by what happens Sunday. Should one game produce a blow out while the other plays a tight one, it will be reflected greatly in the Super Bowl line.

Three’s the Magic Number
Value with the Number "3"
The only sportsbook in Las Vegas that doesn’t attach additional money to any of their key numbers is Bert Osborne’s South Point. Rather than move a game from minus-3 flat to minus-3 (-120) like most of the books do today, Osborne goes right to minus-3 ½ flat. This season, over 18% of all NFL games landed on “3,” but Osborne’s year-over-year analysis proves his strategy more profitable in the end. While most books deflected action last week on the Ravens-Steelers game because of the additional money attached to that line, Osborne kept hopping back and forth with limit bets at plus-3 ½ with the Ravens and minus-3 with Steelers. In the end, the overall action attracted because of the flat lines helped create a profitable weekend, better than most.

This week Osborne has a major dilemma as both games are hovering around “3”. Should one of the favored teams land on “3“, he‘ll get sided and refund several bets while paying out the winning side at plus-3 ½. Osborne is probably hoping that the games run up more to avoid the key number, but if they don’t, and you’re looking for value, the South Point and the books under their umbrella such as the Cannery, Palms and El Cortez are definitely places to shop.

Bettors Fare Well Last Week
You would think with half of the underdogs winning that the sportsbooks would have done very well, but that wasn’t the case. The local books were able to scrap out a small win, but just about everyone else fared poorly as both the Packers and Jets found plenty of supporters.

Auburn Line Correct?
Auburn’s 3-point win over Oregon in the BCS title game landed just how the bookmakers thought, right? The game opened Auburn minus-3 at most sportsbooks, but dropped considerably to a pick’em at most places by kickoff. Most all of the power ratings had the game as an initial pick’em which has the question begging to ask, where did the “3” come from? No one wants to be out of line in a big game like that, but it appears that there was some early manipulation on the number that set the market, and it wasn‘t necessarily by any book in Las Vegas either.

It’s not unusual to see instances of pre-seeding games by Sharp groups early at a few sports books with hopes of influencing the entire market. All it takes is a few limit plays by respected players at respected books early on to get the ball rolling and then everyone else falls in line. When the Sharp’s desired line is set, they can bet over 20 times the amount initially seeded later at all the other sportsbooks who follow suit.

The final move proved wrong, other than those who pushed with Oregon, but most of the books still lost money on the game. It wasn’t a result of the possible manipulation, but rather because of extended risk from over a month of taking bowl parlays with Auburn or Oregon being the final leg.

NASCAR is close
Tension is building with NASCAR fans because the wait for the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 is too far away. It’s only been two months since the last race was run, but it feels like an eternity. This week, fans and bettors can get a sneak preview to who will be fast in next month’s speed weeks as the Sprint Cup series will be having a three-day test session at Daytona.

During a recent Goodyear tire test, it was found that the new Daytona surface made the cars a little too fast, so they will be experimenting with an even smaller restrictor plate than last season for the testing. However, don’t expect too much to change from last year. Those who were good in the plate races, namely the Childress and Ganassi teams, will be good again this year.

Just about every sportsbook has their Daytona 500 odds up. While the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book leads the way with the lowest theoretic hold percentage in the city, it’s still a good idea to check all the books around town to find value on certain drivers that maybe the Hilton considered more of a favorite. Must stops for finding early value are all of the Mirage properties, Lucky’s and the M Resort and Spa.

College Basketball Notes

Colorado Buffs For Real
We talked a little bit last week about how well Colorado has been playing this year despite playing a weak non-conference schedule, but the strategy has paid off as they have started Big 12 conference play with a 3-0 record. An 89-76 home trouncing over No. 8 Missouri was eye opening, but it still is just one game where anything can happen. But winning at No. 20 Kansas State Wednesday and then beating a very good Oklahoma State team on Saturday should send major alerts to the college basketball world that the Buffs are indeed for real for the first time since Chauncey Billups was there. This week they have winnable, but yet, tough road games at Nebraska and Oklahoma. Then the real test will come as they welcome No.3 Kansas to Boulder January 25.

In their win over Oklahoma State, the Buffs didn’t get to dictate the fast pace they would have liked, but they still sent the game over 143 ½. Surprisingly, despite Colorado running fast and wild all season, the move was on the under for the game. From the beginning of the season, up until now, Colorado may be the most rapidly adjusted team in all power ratings. The value will eventually shift against them, but as of now, betting OVER with them still looks to be the way to for a while.

Little Sisters of the Poor?
We watched the bias of voting during football season as TCU and Boise State were disrespected because of their conference affiliation and after this weeks College Basketball polls came out, we saw it again with San Diego State as they remained No. 6 with Duke sliding into No. 5 after their loss to Florida State. With big wins over UNLV and at New Mexico, the Aztecs warranted much more consideration than given.

Star Player Under the Radar
Hofstra senior guard Charles Jenkins doesn’t get too much publicity on a national level, but those who have been betting basketball this year know who he is, or the results of his play, because he’s been cashing in for them all season. Jenkins has upgraded an already great career at Hoftsra with a masterful senior season improving in every area which has led his team to an 11-6 record. He’s averaging 23.5 points-per-game and has reduced turnovers while also increasing assists from his previous three seasons. In the process, Jenkins has led the Pride to a 5-1 Colonial conference record straight up and ATS.

Good Teams Not Covering
It’s been almost two weeks since the No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes have covered a spread. It’s not even as if they have played the Big 10’s best teams since conference play started either. Saturday, they won by only 3-points as a 19-point favorite to Penn State. The Buckeyes look ripe for the upset this week as they play at Illinois on Saturday.

On the same note, Georgetown was on a five-game skid ATS until covering against Rutgers Saturday at a short price thanks, in part, to their rating shrinking. Because of that lower rating, there may some value this week as they play at Seton Hall and a home date against St. John’s.

Despite being undefeated this season, Syracuse hasn't been able to live up to their lofty rating as they have covered only seven games this season among their 18 wins. However, they have their longest ATS win streak currently going on right now with two in a row after beating Cincinnati.

Marquette Streaking
One of the best bets over the last three weeks has been taking Marquette against anyone. They have covered six games in a row while going 3-3 straight up. This week they’ll face DePaul and then travel to Notre Dame.

Oregon’s New Court is…Different
The Oregon basketball team christened their new $227 million arena last week with a win over USC, but all everyone could talk about was the actual floor. The intent of the floor was to pay homage to the beautiful Pacific Northwest by surrounding the court with a forest of brown-and-tan fir trees. It’s also to symbolize the 1939 Oregon squad who the National Championship known as “The Tall Firs”.

However, comments have been flowing from fans who dislike the design sating that the design looks like a mushroom trip gone bad, or even worse, looks like actual throw-up. The glare to TV viewers may be the most distracting part. It’s just an unnatural projection of colors that probably wasn’t well thought out, but liked so much by Nike owner, and Oregon Alum, Phillip Knight, who built the place, that everyone just let it go. Beyond all that, no one can even see the mid-court line, which is kind of an important part of the game.

NFL Conference Championship Games Betting Trends

By Bruce Marshall
VegasInsider.com

As we enter conference championship weekend, there are a few specific trends that merit review. "Intermediate/high" favorites (those laying between 7-9.5 points) are 15-4 vs. the number in conference championships since 1970. Included in those ranks were last year's Colts, a 30-17 winner over the Jets. Double-digit favorites, however, are only 4-8 vs. the line.

Home teams are unbeaten straight up in conference title games the past two years and have won better than two-thirds of the time since the merger (54 of 80). Conference title "totals" have also trended "over" (7-1) the last four seasons.

We also must again reference the many lopsided conference title scores from the past and should offer caution to handicappers whose initial instincts are often to side with a high quality team in what is a rare underdog role.

Although we have been treated to some compelling conference title games in recent years, final margins have still historically drifted into double digits in this round, including last year's aforementioned AFC finale.

Remember, almost half of the conference title games since the 1970 merger (38 of 80) have been decided by 14 points or more, with nearly two-thirds (53 of 80) being decided by double digits.

Following is a list of point-spread breakdowns and results of AFC & NFC Championships since 1970.

Roberts NFL Divisional Playoff Selections: Patriots Look Like the Best Bet of Weekend

Here are my Pro Football plays for this week:

Ravens should compete well with the Steelers, again
Saturday, January 15
Ravens +3 ½ @ Pittsburgh
Getting three points, plus a hook, in any game between these two has proven to be a winning combination as five of their last seven meetings have been three point games. Though the Steelers are unbeaten when having a week off before any playoff game with Big Ben, I think the wild card week provides invaluable momentum for Baltimore this week. A little too chicken to take the money line, but love the value of getting the points.

Falcons -1 ½ vs. Packers
ATL/GB OVER 43 ½
I expect this to be the most competitive high scoring game of the weekend with the Falcons showing why they are the top seed in the NFC by winning 13 games. Atlanta is virtually unbeatable at home, going 20-2 during Matt Ryan's career. I had made this game Falcons -5 based on my ratings.

Sunday, January 16
Patriots -8 ½ vs. Jets
The Jets are doing what they do best, which is trash talking, but they’re doing it at the absolute worst time, targeting the worst choice. Maybe if Tom Brady had been in a slump with his offense not in sync, the tactics may work, but picking on a player who hasn’t thrown an interception since week 6, whose offense has scored 30 or more points eight straight games, including 45 against the Jets, doesn’t seem wise. Look for Brady to respond back big with scoreboard trash talk.

No real opinion on the Bears game. Would love to take the Bears against the awful Seattle defense, but I can't seem to get Jay Cutler's must win games with Denver out of my head. Although the Seahawks did win at Chicago in week 6, they have looked like the worst team in football since then. The win over the Saints last week is more about the Saints being pretty soft and playing to the level of their opponents all season.

Las Vegas Sports Book Betting Moves For The Playoffs & Other Strip Notes

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

M Resort & Spa Sports Book VIP Seats
I make my weekly rounds of phone calls to different Sports Book Directors around the city to talk about whatever is going in their sports books to get a vibe on what’s happening, but on Thursday, I experienced a definite first. When M Resort & Spa Director Mike Colbert answered the phone, he was extremely preoccupied, but it wasn’t just being busy as normal with booking games. Colbert informed me -- with a proud happiness in his tone -- that he was at the hospital with his wife who had just given birth to his first child, a 9.2 pound baby boy named Michael Alexander.

After exchanges of how happy I was for him, I didn’t want to take any more of his time, but I couldn’t help but ask how he was going to balance the new arrangement in his life. To give an idea of why I would ask such a question like that, it’s only because Colbert is one of the most tireless bosses I’ve ever seen in the sports book industry. Whatever day, or hour of the night it is that I have visited the M, he’s always there. Whenever I call to get a recap on the late Sunday games, he’s always there. I’m still not sure he’s ever taken a vacation, let alone two consecutive days off, since the M opened it’s doors almost two years ago.

Hearing the smile in Colbert’s voice, he simply said, “Michael’s going to make me work harder, because now I have something to really look forward to, keeping me focused for the long term and make his life the best it can be.”

As for when exactly he’s going to be able to find time to sleep, Colbert said, “I‘m already getting practice with the sleepless nights.”

While at the hospital, Colbert also had his computer and cell phone on hand so he could take the occasional glimpses at what was going on within the operation he runs for Cantor Gaming, which now includes the Cosmopolitan and the New Tropicana, and soon will take over the new Hard Rock Hotel race and sports book.

“I’m keeping up to date with what bets we are taking and what direction we want to go with games on sizeable bets.”

Before I could wish him all best, because I didn’t want to take up any more his valuable time, he began talking about the games in our regular normal fashion of discussion. He was probably as excited as I’ve ever heard him, for obvious reasons, but he was also really looking forward to the weekend of games. So we talked a little more.

Colbert sees value with the Jets at New England Sunday
“I think there is value with the Jets this weekend, plus-9 is too many,” Colbert explained, “Even though they got rocked in that Monday night game, the Sharp money was with the Jets at plus-4 in that game. We’ve had minus-7 ½ with the Patriots up all week and have had no takers leading me to believe that is closer to the right number since everyone else is at 8 ½ or 9.”

As of Thursday afternoon, there weren’t even any minus-8‘s out there. If there was anyone out there with large money that liked New England -- regardless of the time of week -- that bet would have been made already at the M, and it hasn’t. It doesn’t mean that the Jets are going to win or cover, but it does definitely give some insight to what the sharpest bettors in town are thinking, people who win more often than not with large straight bets.

Another game Colbert had vastly different from everyone else in town, and the world for that matter, was the Falcons game where he has been steady with the Falcons as a 1-point (-125) favorite while everyone else is either -2, -2 ½, or -3 (even).

“I’m keeping the number down early just to avoid piling up extended risk on teaser action crossing too far over a key number with Atlanta. The public loves the Packers and will be all over them and I would tend to lean that way myself.”

Colbert thinks the biggest blowout of the week will come in Chicago with the Bears as a 10-point favorite.

“Seattle has a very soft defense and just beat a team with a similarly soft defense who was on the road. Whoever the Seahawks put behind center is going to have a rough day against the Bears defense, one that I’d put the closest to the league’s best with the Steelers.”

History shows getting +3 and a hook in this series is nice
The game that has got the most action at the M from the Sharps, of what little has came in already, has been the Ravens who were bet as a 3 ½-point (-115) underdog. The play may have more to do with the fact that over 18% of this years NFL games landed on “3” and the Ravens and Steelers were prominently featured in those statistics with both their games landing. In fact, these two teams rarely play a game where it doesn’t land on “3”.

The M currently has Pittsburgh as 3 ½-point (EVEN) favorites while several books are reluctant to get off the key number placing the Steelers at minus-3 (-120 or -125). The South Point Sports Book is the only place in Las Vegas that is Steelers minus-3 ½ flat. They are the only book in town to use exclusively flat numbers in their football lineup.

Congratulations again to Mr. and Mrs. Colbert and welcome to the world Michael Alexander. And also, much apologies for the intrusion, but thanks as always for the insights.

Cantor Gaming Growing in Las Vegas
Cantor Gaming currently has remote betting stations set up in the Cosmpolitan and New Tropicana giving bettors on the strip a new opportunity for more variety in betting lines among all the other well known places. The Tropicana’s new race and sports book is scheduled to open January 31st along with the Hard Rock’s while the Cosmopolitan’s new site will open in mid-February. I have viewed the plans for the new sites and they will be quite elegant, and very popular with both locals and tourists.

Cosmopolitan, A Force on the Vegas Scene
As for each of the individual properties, and their casino/entertainment layout, I have seen both and I’m very impressed. The Tropicana now has a feel of being at a South Beach resort with everything so clean and white, while the Cosmopolitan doesn’t look like anything I‘ve ever seen.

Chandelier Lounge at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas
I was completely blown away by this property. It’s in Las Vegas, right in between the Bellagio and City Center, but it doesn’t feel like Las Vegas. It’s more like being at an exclusively party at some super rich guys modern house in Europe. Between the fashionable chic design of the property, soft tones of the lighting, the beautiful people everywhere and the layers of entertainment on each floor, I hardly noticed that it actually was a casino.

My favorite place was this three layered lounge with spiral staircases adjoining each differing level appropriately called the “Chandelier Bar“ because of the long draping lines of small crystals that form a surrounding sheer curtain. It might be the most relaxed environment, yet upscale, that I’ve ever been in which is saying a lot because I have been to quite a few bars and lounges around the world. The music was perfect, not too low, or too high like a night club, and I didn’t even know who it was playing. It‘s a place you could take any executive, co-worker, family or girlfriend -- like I did -- and all equally find it a quality experience that appeals to all.

For all that a giant Chandelier’s regal beauty represents in class and style for high-end hotels or mansions, the Cosmo got it dead on right with the theme that has never -- to my knowledge -- been tried.

Professional Bettor Billy Walters To Be Featured on CBS' 60 Minutes

Pro gambler Bill Walters bets tens of millions of dollars on sports each year, calling his losses "feathers" and his wins "chicken." So far, there's been chicken at the end of every year he has made a living on gambling in Las Vegas, a winning streak that's made odds makers call him the "most dangerous sports bettor."

Lara Logan gets a rare interview with Walters, who lets her in on his technique, for a "60 Minutes" story to be broadcast this Sunday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT.

SEATTLE at CHICAGO... Seahawks just 2-6 vs. line on road this season, and all nine of their losses have been by 15 points or more. Seattle now 3-14 vs. number on road since late in the ‘08 campaign. Seahawks "over" 12-4-1 this season, and "over" 13-5 last 18 as visitor. Bears 6-2 vs. line last 8 in 2010. Tech edge-"Over" and Bears, based on "totals" and Seahawks’ road trends.

NY JETS at NEW ENGLAND... Belichick surprisingly has dropped his last five playoff pointspread decisions, although Patriots roared down stretch this season, covering 10 of last 13. Interestingly, Jets and Patriots have split their regular-season pointspread decisions the past five years, with home teams winning and covering all such games the past two years. Rex Ryan 8-5 as dog since ‘09. Belichick "over" 15-3 last 18 since late in ‘09 campaign, Jets "over" 16-6 last 22 since late ‘09, and these two were "over" in both of their 2010 meetings. Tech edge-"Over," based on "totals" trends.

Las Vegas Sports Books Split Wild Card Weekend, Get "Gift" From Boston College

With three of the four NFL underdogs winning over the weekend, you might be inclined to think that the Las Vegas sportsbooks did very well, but that’s not necessarily the case. In fact, the final results after Sunday’s games had more to do with extended risk and liability from a month of college football bowl games than the highly anticipated Wild Card weekend. Following the Packers win over the Eagles -- the final of the four playoff games -- the books were sweating the “Fight Hunger Bowl” in San Francisco between Nevada and Boston College which would ultimately decide their fate.It seemed odd after watching all these BCS bowls for a week that an unranked team in Boston College would be playing the second best team from the WAC in a bowl game this late, but here they were on Jan. 9, playing a bowl game on the eve of the National Championship game. When Nevada opened as 9 ½-point favorites, the Sharps jumped all over Boston College pushing the line down to minus-7 ½ where it stood until game day. Once the results started piling in from the pro football games and Friday night’s LSU win, the liability got pretty large on Nevada because of public support.
We’re not just talking about straight bets that paid winnings off of juiced bets either, we’re talking about major payouts as Nevada was the final leg of many parlay’s that had been bet weeks in advance that were going to payout 20/1, 40/1 and higher. Between parlays off the board and parlay cards, a Nevada win was going to be a six-figure loss for most sportsbooks in town.

After giving up the first touchdown of the game, Nevada reeled off the next 20 points and carried a 20-7 lead into late in the fourth quarter. After a series of questionable Nevada penalties on a late Boston College drive with under five minutes to go, the Eagles got into field goal range and kicked the cover field goal rather than going for a fourth-and-six play. For the sportsbooks, that field goal saved what would have been a disastrous day.
Saturday’s upset wins by the Seahawks and Jets were very good decisions for the books, but the extended risk from those game leading into Sunday’s games were pressing and everyone had the Ravens with a slight lean to the Packers. The only saving grace for the books after the Packers win was the total staying under 46 ½-points leaving the final posted game for the day being the Nevada game.
The books should consider themselves lucky that the risk wasn‘t higher on the game thanks to Miami-Ohio beating Middle Tennessee in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Thursday. MTSU opened as a 2-point underdog but closed as the 2-point favorite. Everyone was on the Blue Raiders for some reason and it was that loss, after many successes during the week with Stanford, Ohio State and LSU, that chopped off much of the liability.
This week the sportsbooks can get back to having a normal playoff week without the looming risk of old college football games haunting them. Four isolated games with only eight decisions. Sure, the possibility exists that an eight-teamer can hit, but it’s much less likely when the eight options are being dictated rather than the plentiful board full of games like we’ve seen the last few weeks.
Last year we saw three of the four teams cover in the Wild Card round and the same thing happened over the weekend. In the divisional round last year, we saw three of the four favored teams cover with the Chargers taking a fall as big favorites to the Jets. Look for similar occurrences this week with the favorites. Don’t be afraid to lay the points with all four favorites this week as they are all much better than their opponents. They had the week off for a reason.
Each one of the games has a tie-in to the regular season. The Falcons beat the Packers 20-17 in Week 12, the Seahawks won at Chicago 23-20 in Week 6 and the Patriots andSteelers both split their series matchups against their divisional rivals. The Jets offense was much more in sync when they won their Week 2 game against the visiting Patriots as opposed to the dead team that got blasted 45-3 in Week 13 at New England while the Ravens and Steelers played a typical battle in their long line of fights in both of their games won the others home field.
The Seahawks stuck it to the Saints in a big way Saturday looking better than they have all season, a season that saw all nine of their losses come by 15 points or more. Laying 9 ½-points with the Bears seems a tall task, especially considering that the Bears were only 6 ½-point favorites in Week 6 when they lost, but man, it’s hard to get that sour Seahawks taste out of the mouth after watching them melt down from the eighth week on.
The top bet of the week looks to be the Patriots laying 8 ½-points, followed by the Falcons, Steelers and then the Bears. Good Luck!!
Tuley the Great
Dave Tuley of ViewFromVegas.com wrote on my Facebook page last week detailing all four eventual winners along with a total, and hit them all. A five bagger! Tuley, who writes a weekly sports gaming piece in the Daily Racing Form, has been known for some time in Las Vegas for his expertise in finding underdog pro football winners and it will be interesting to see what he has in store this week, a round that is pretty favorable to the favorites. Knowing his tendencies, I would think he’d be leaning towards the Ravens and Seahawks, but we’ll have to find out later in the week.
Bill Bennett Celebrated
Because my late Mother worked for Circus Circus while I was growing up in Las Vegas, and because I got my first job in the sportsbook industry there in the early 90’s, it was with eager anticipation that I found and read Jack Sheehan’s book “The Forgotten Man” about former Circus Circus president Bill Bennett. The title of the book couldn’t be more appropriate because Bennett is somewhat of a forgotten man when people speak of the origins of Las Vegas, but Bennett was a pioneer in his own class with not many rivals.
His marketing campaigns and ability to go after the family vacationers on budgets kept Circus Circus churning millions of dollars in profits in what was an otherwise untapped market. His success in building that empire brought thousands of jobs from his other conquests such as building the Excalibur and Luxor in Las Vegas, as well as the Colorado Belle and Edgewater in Laughlin. He also was a key figure in building the Las Vegas Motor Speedway which has brought millions in non-gaming revenue annually to the market.
My fondest memories of Bennett was how much he cared about each individual that worked for him, something that has long passed in today’s corporate Las Vegas. Every Christmas Bennett made sure that each one of his employees got a turkey and two bottles of wine for the Holiday’s. It was a small and simple gesture, but it was a thanks that the employees appreciated and what endeared him to all. When Bennett left unceremoniously from the corporation he founded -- that later became the juggernaut of the entire town -- so did the turkey’s and wine.
Cheers to Bill Bennett, and also to Jack Sheehan for writing the book so well on Bennett’s life documenting his contributions to Las Vegas as we know it today.

Latest NFL Divisional Playoff Trends Favor the Underdogs

It seems like only yesterday when NFL playoff teams took the field with a week of rest against advancing Wild Card Round winners and proceeded directly to winners circle. But such is not the case today. As Bob Dylan so sagely put it, “The times are a-changin’.”
Don’t know if you’ve noticed but what was once a moneymaking proposition backing rested teams in the NFL postseason has turned into a stone-cold loser, instead. Perhaps it’s been an over-adjustment by the linesmaker. Or maybe it was an edge that was lost by teams that opted not to play their starters in season-ending games. Whatever the case, to ask them to ‘turn on the switch’ two weeks later simply isn’t working.
Let’s examine how these rested teams have fared in the playoffs since 1990, when the league shifted from a ten to a twelve-team playoff format. Here are the results. (Note - all rested teams were hosting unrested Wild Card round winners and dated listed are by ‘season’):
1990-2009
59-21 SU and 42-36-2 ATS
Overall, an unspectacular 54% winning effort against the number. However, let’s break down the numbers and take a closer look at how these same teams have fared over the past two decades:
1990-1999
33-7 SU and 24-15-1 ATS
2000-2008
 26-14 SU and 18-21-1 ATS
Uh, oh. Do you see what I see? Like the BP oil rig, these well-rested home teams appear to be leaking oil at an alarming rate. In fact, over the last four years these teams appear to have blown a gasket, going just 8-8 SU and 5-11 ATS.
Now, what is your take on coaches resting starters in Weeks 16 or 17 of the season? So much for letting air out of the ‘momentum-balloon’.
My suggestion this week would be to take the time and carefully evaluate the four rested hosts and get a better perspective of their condition as they enter their opening round games. It could be time well spent…

NFL Divisional Playoffs Betting Notes

By Bruce Marshall

There are some dynamics worth mentioning that are unique to this round. Since 1990, when the playoffs were expanded from 10 teams to 12, all Division Round hosts have been off a "bye" and a week of rest. And almost all of the "powerhouse" NFL teams in recent memory are from that first-round "bye" group, including 51 of the last 64 Super Bowl participants since '78 (when the first-round "bye" was introduced). At least one top seed, however, had met defeat division-round action in the four seasons prior to a year ago, when the Saints and Colts both prevailed. The Falcons and Patriots are thus forewarned. But, recalling the often-lopsided nature of these games, don't be surprised by an absence of drama this weekend, either.

Whatever. Following are the point-spread results in various spread categories of NFL Division Round playoff games since 1975. Our "charting" begins with the '75 season because, prior to then, playoff home teams were predetermined in a divisional rotation, as opposed to the better won-loss record. A "margin of victory" chart for the games since 1975 is included as well.

Roberts NFL Wild Card Weekend Selections: Saints Laying 10 Stands Out The Most

Drew Brees should have no problems at Seattle
I have been torn all week on who to pick in all four of the Wild Card matchups with leans towards the underdogs. I could just leave the games alone, and probably should, but I want to watch the games with some vested interest. It really is hard to watch games without any type of action, whether it’s a friendly bet with a friend, squares pool at a bar, fantasy football or any other proposition based betting that happens on the fly. So I will bet, but I will bet smaller than usual. Even if I do well and show a profit, negating what a normal unit profit would have been, I will know that I didn’t really, really like a side.

Saints -10 @ Seattle: Nine losses by 15 or more points is a pretty good start to bet against someone, especially when the Saints were one of those teams that already did it. The Seahawks won their playoff game last week against the Rams. Saints should roll.

Saints/Seahawks OVER 44 ½: Because I like the Saints to win handsomely, the total should get there as I’m looking for a 38-16 score.

Jets +2 @ Indianapolis: I’m not buying into Peyton Manning at home this time around. I don’t like that the public is with the Jets, but the Colts just aren’t a very good team right now. If the Jets can get two offensive touchdowns, they’ll win, and I think they will. No opinion on the total of 44 ½, but if liking the Jets to win, I would look at the under.

Ravens -3 @ Kansas City: This spot reminds me a little of the Jets game at Cincinnati in this round last year. Nice story this season with the Chiefs and their great running game, but defense carries this one and I believe the front seven of Baltimore will give the Chiefs a hard time. I also like how battle tested these Ravens are on the road in the playoffs. A small lean to the under 40 ½ also.

Eagles -3 vs. Packers: This is the toughest of all the games this weekend. The public loves the Packers while everyone is down on the Eagles after two straight poor performances. However, I’ll take the Eagles at home with DeSean Jackson back in the lineup against a Packers offense that falls asleep sometimes.

There you have it, my five plays of the weekend without much conviction. Good Luck!

NFL Wild Card Weekend Betting Moves at Las Vegas Sports Books

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Twenty NFL teams are finished for the year, four are waiting for an opponent while on a bye week and eight slug it out to advance this weekend. It’s Wild Card week of the playoffs, a portion of the playoffs that is much unlike the divisional and championship rounds because the short underdogs have major value.

Upon the Las Vegas sportsbooks opening the lines, the Sharps sided with all of the underdogs with three of the four all getting three points. Much of the attraction has to do strictly with the value of “3” this season, a margin of victory that has landed 47 times this season totaling 18.5% of all games. It’s the highest total seen in the league for some time. Consider that just two years ago, only 28 games (10.5%) landed on this short margin.

The other factor is just how well short ‘dogs have done in this round. Since 1978, teams getting 1 to 3 points in the Wild Card round have gone 26-16-2 against the spread. And, home underdogs have gone a combined 11-3 in all Wild Card contests. The low spreads success rate may indicate that maybe too much respect is being given to the home team where the value is generally worth 3 to 3 ½ points in the rating.

Last year, the books had all four games hovering from minus-1 to minus-4 with all the home teams favored. One of the games, the Packers at Arizona, moved six points by kickoff with the Packers ending up being favored by 3-points. Three of the underdogs won outright, including Arizona, with only Dallas covering as a favorite.

This season we have a monster favorite like never seen before from a road team in the Wild Card. The Saints opened as 10-point favorites over Seattle and were quickly bet up to minus-10 ½, but it’s been two-way action since with the line hopping back and forth between the two numbers over at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book.

This game against the 7-9 Seahawks fits the Saints profile perfect as they have beaten only two teams this season that had winning records. They beat the Seahawks in Week 11 as an 11-point favorite 34-19 at home, but along the way have fell into lapses like losing to Cleveland, Arizona and nearly losing to the Panthers.

Seattle meanwhile comes in with a solid conservative effort in a must-win game against the Rams with backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst leading the way for only their second win in their last seven played. The team they beat over that span was the Panthers. This week, however, Seattle will be going back with Matt Hasselbeck, who engineered many of those losses despite Whitehurst being a bit more mobile.

The first two large bets in the Jets-Colts games were on the Jets getting plus-3 and then plus-3 (-125) before settling at Colts minus-2 ½. The Jets were in the same position last season in this round at Cincinnati and won outright. They then won at San Diego as large 7-point underdogs before losing 30-17 at Indianapolis in the AFC Championship game as 7 ½-point underdogs.

During the second half of the season, Peyton Manning just hasn’t looked like himself throwing 15 of his 17 interceptions from Week 9 on. Part of that has been getting used to life without targets Dallas Clark and Austin Collie. The other part has been an injury riddled running back corps. Running back Joseph Addai and the gang are back and probably healthier than ever right now, but Collie and Clark remain out.

Who would have ever thought there would be a time when Manning was quarterbacking at home during the playoffs where we could lay a field goal or perhaps less at kickoff?

There were some early plays on the Chiefs as Sharps were playing the value of the number and home underdog trends, but after going to Ravens minus-2 ½, money came in on the Ravens pushing the number back to minus-3. It’s been teetering back and forth ever since going from even money to flat with more Chiefs money.

These are two teams that are playing well at the moment with the Chiefs winning five of their last seven while the Ravens have won six of their last seven. The Ravens are riding high right now and have been one of the better road playoff teams in recent playoff history. The Chiefs come limping in after getting destroyed by the Raiders in Week 17. True, it was a meaningless game, but come on, it was the hated Raiders. The timing of Charlie Weiss announcing he was going to make a lateral move as offensive coordinator for Florida sure sounds like a correlation for their flat play last week.

The game of the week, or at least sexiest, is Green Bay visiting Philadelphia for a Week 1 rematch where the whole Michael Vick re-birth began after linebacker Clay Matthews knocked then starting QB Kevin Kolb out of the game. The Packers won 27-20, but not before Vick gave us glimpse of what was about to do this season. Vick had the Packers defense off balance in the second half.

The Eagles opened minus-3 (EVEN) and Packers money came in dropping the line to minus- 2 ½ (-120). Most of the Las Vegas sportsbooks have the game at either 2 ½ flat or money tied to it, but the Hilton and Mirage both have the Eagles at minus-3 (EVEN).

I still haven’t decided who I’m going to take in these games as a case can be made for all, but I have to have at least some kind of action on them. You can’t just watch a football game with nothing riding on it. Fantasy football is over, so I can’t even resort to that. My first instinct is to take the Ravens who are basically the road warriors in the playoffs. However, the home underdog stat has me doubting the pick. My other instincts say take the Saints, Packers and Jets, but I could probably be talked out of each game.

As for the public and early ticket counts, it’s all on the Ravens, Packers, Saints and Colts, in that order. The early week plays are usually a good indicator of what the overall public consensus is. However, about 95% of the action for these games will come Friday night through Sunday. The Packers late game Sunday will be a tough spot for the sportsbooks, who will have all that weighted play parlayed into the final game, even if two of the other three games turn out well for them.

Super Bowl Futures
For those looking to play futures to win the Super Bowl or Conferences, my advice is to just bet the money line on the team all the way, rolling the money over weekly. In some cases, it’s not as easy for people to get bets down weekly which is why they take the set future odds as a matter of convenience. But for those looking to get maximum value on your team, taking the set price almost never equals out to what a certain team would pay if just rolling the money over weekly. Do the math on potential matchups in each conference and you’ll see that rolling the money over is the best way to increase your bankroll and value.

Should the set price then be greater than what the math shows, then that should be the only time to bet a Super Bowl future. But that rarely happens because most sports books build in a 20% or higher theoretical hold for this round of 12 teams that always gives the edge to the house. There are some instances where books will inflate certain teams to attract action due to liability from the course of the season, but it still rarely goes beyond the true odds.

The fairest future odds in Las Vegas for all sports with low hold percentages are always at the Hilton, M Resort & Spa and Lucky’s.

NFL Wild Card Trends

Handicapping the NFL Playoffs can be a bit tricky.
The knee-jerk reaction is to back home teams. After all, they have been a solid-moneymaker, going 157-125-6 ATS (55.6%), dating back to 1980.
Today, however, that would be a mistake as the success of home teams in the playoffs has dissolved like an Alka Seltzer in a cold glass of water.

Click here to find out more!
A closer look finds home teams just 109-94-5 ATS since 1990 and, even worse, 54-56-7 ATS since 2000. Hence, like the economy, they have fallen on hard times.
The key is breaking the playoffs down into rounds. And in doing so it’s wise to remember the oddsmakers have made the visiting teams more attractive (read: value-laden) than ever before.
Let’s break down opening round games involving No. 3 or lower seeded teams with these three time-tested theories. Note: all results are ATS (Against The Spread) and are since 1980, unless noted otherwise.
Stun guns
Teams in NFL Wild Card round contests playing off a straight up season ending loss as a favorite tend to bounce back up off the carpet, going 30-15-1. (New Orleans, Kansas City)
Better yet, dress them up as dogs and they improve to 14-4. (Kansas City)
Double pressure
Teams off back-to-back season ending losses apply their own tourniquet as they stop the bleeding, going 20-9 (Philadelphia).
Put them at home and they zoom to 13-4 (Philadelphia).
ATS diabetes
Teams off a season ending blowout win in which they beat the spread by more than 20 points suffer from more than a sugar rush, going just 10-17-2 during this round (N.Y. Jets).
Feed them a field goal (+3) or more and they die a slow death, going 1-7.
There you have it. I’ll be back next week with a peek at the Divisional Round playoff matchups.
Good luck as always.

NFL Wild Card Betting Trends

By Bruce Marshall
VegasInsider.com

Ryan and the Jets have stats in their favor as a short dog
Results-wise, there have been a few trends to note in wildcard games that differ from later playoff rounds. In particular, underdogs have more than held their own in these first-round games (a departure from division round and conference title action), especially the shorter-priced (1-3 point) dogs that stand 24-17-2 vs. the number since '78, including 7-3 the last three years.

Home dogs are usually rare in playoff action, but there will be two of them this weekend, and they're a noteworthy 11-3 vs. the number in first-round games since '78. Some insiders believe the absence of the top two conference seeds in the wildcard round has contributed to better overall underdog mark than in subsequent rounds, but it's worth noting that one-sided results are still fairly common in the first-round games, with nine of 20 contests since 2005 being decided by 14 points or more, as have close to half of all games (46 of 102) since the wildcard round was introduced in 1978. "Totals" results are almost equally split since 1990 ("unders" leading 20-19-1), although all four games went "over" a year ago.

Following are the point-spread results for wildcard playoff games since 1978 (excluding the 1982 "strike" season, when all 16 playoff teams participated in first-round games).

NFL WILDCARD PLAYOFF GAMES SINCE 1978

CATEGORY...VS. POINTS
1-3 pt. dogs...24-17-2
3 1/2-6 1/2 pt. dogs...18-16-1
7-pt. or more dogs...11-12
Home dogs...11-3
Road dogs... 42-42-3

Margins of victory (102 total games)-21 games have been decided by 1-3 points, 22 games by 4-7 points, 13 games by 8-13 points, and 46 games have been decided by 14 points or more.

Sports Books Roughed Up on New Years Day, But Get it Back In NFL Week 17

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

The new year started out great for the bettors as everything they played on New Years day turned to gold. The bowl games went well for them with all six games going the public’s way, four favorites and two underdogs. One of the favorites, Florida, got a gift wrapped pick-six with 55 seconds to go in a 30-24 game that Penn State was covering the 7 ½-points. Later it was the underdog the public really liked, Wisconsin plus-3, missing the two-point conversion with two minutes to go keeping the game at 21-19 and a gift cover. Stuff like that rarely happens an season, let alone one single day.

However, once the NFL Sunday rolled around the next day, it was apparent this wasn’t really a new year or age dawning on bettors across the state. It was the same unpredictable season from 2010 that had seen only two profitable weeks from the first 16 weeks. Yes, it was technically a new year and the terrific opening day to the year in the bowl games proves it, but it was still week 17 of the 2010 season and more of the same was about to come.

In perhaps one of the most strenuous NFL weeks of the year for the bookmaker, all their attention to detail, rumors, coaching plans and player status paid off as they showed a small win for the week where the favorites went 8-8. With all the scenarios of teams trying to get in to the playoffs with a handful of meaningless games, there appeared to be somewhat of an opportunity to turn the tables on the sports books. Information is the key to everything in the NFL line, the strongest, sturdiest line in all of sports. Many of the week 17 lines were weak with not a lot of confidence put into them making many of last weeks spreads as strong as an Arena Football line.

After the early games -- where the favorites went 5-3 -- it looked like the weak lines would favor the bettors. The Patriots had everything sewn up in the AFC and were expected to rest Tom Brady and many key players after a few series which was why the line was only minus-4. Had the game been played in week 10, the Patriots would have been a 7 ½-point favorite. Brady did eventually come out of the game, but not until the third quarter when the Pats already had a comfortable 31-0 lead.

Two games that had some meaning went quite easily for the favored side with the Steelers and Falcons crushing their opponents much to the bettors delight. The Jets didn’t have much to play for, thus pulled Mark Sanchez very early and didn’t use their running back tandem, yet cruised to an easy 38-8 win over the Bills in a game that closed with the Jets minus-1.

Those four games were weighted public games that showed a mounting risk for the late games that included all the liability from the previous days bowl games. They needed a little help in the late games and they got it.

After the Falcons wrapped up the NFC with an early win, the Bears had nothing to play for and that expectation had the line built in where the Packers were an 11-point favorite. Without the scenarios and implications in place, the Packers may have been minus- 4 ½ for this game, but with nothing to gain from the win, it was expected that Lovie Smith would rest his players. However, the Bears-Packers rivalry won out and Smith played all his key players throughout with hopes of knocking the hated Packers out of the playoffs. The Bears made a game of it and lost in the final seconds with a Jay Cutler interception, but covered the spread with a final score of 10-3.

Another popular play was the Giants laying 4-points at Washington. The Giants were hoping for the Bears to play well and knock the Packers out so they could get in to the playoffs. There was no doubt that they were scoreboard watching because they seemed to have lost that zip in their step when they saw the Packers up 10-3 and subsequently gave up a late long bomb, back door cover, to Rex Grossman.

A popular two team parlay had the Texans hooked up to the Colts. Had the Jaguars beat the Texans and the Colts lost, Jacksonville would be in. All the Colts had to do was win. With the Jaguars starting quarterback and running back out, laying up to 5-points with Houston seemed like a great deal and it was, one of the few late winners for the public. But the Colts got into a battle with Tennessee as 9-point favorites and were never in any situation to cover as they barely won 23-20 on a late field goal.

The win on the day became collectively comfirmed by the sports books when the Seahwks beat the Rams in the late game. Seahwaks backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst -- the reason many bet the Rams -- played a very consevative, but effective game in getting a 16-6 win. Matt Hasselbeck is expected to start next week's home game against the Saints, a game where New Orleans is a 10-point favorite. Can't say I've ever seen a road favorite like that before.

We can finally wash our hands clean of the regular season and focus on the playoffs where the favorites tend to be stronger. For the bookmakers, congratulations on having your best season ever. Hopefully there will be rewards with bonuses in store from the big bosses for your major contributions to the casino’s bottom line in the last quarter. While bonuses spurred by bettors losses doesn’t make the public feel too well, just know that this season was an anomaly. For all the accolades the Sports Book Directors received from their bosses in 2010, the next losing day will have the bosses asking “How could we lose” with 2010 long gone in the review mirror.

Good luck to the bettors out there in getting the bosses to fret a little bit in the future. Have a Happy, winning New Year!

So What With The Seahawks!
Never have we seen mediocrity rewarded so much in the NFL as we have with the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks making the playoffs. Gaylord Focker -- and his ninth place ribbons -- is even ashamed of the Seahawks accomplishments. However, everyone knew the game and how to play it and Seattle took care of business when they had to, even though it took them a few weeks to seal the deal. So while the Giants and Buccaneers sit at home for the playoffs with 10 wins a piece, and the Seahawks host a playoff game, let us not be upset with the Seahawks, but rather wonder why the other teams couldn’t handle their business when they knew the situation. The Giants had every opportunity to control their own destiny the last two weeks against the Eagles and Packers while Tampa Bay blew a golden opportunity to control their fate by losing a pivotal home game to Detroit three weeks ago.

Mile-High Messiah Returns
The Broncos have won only one playoff game since the John Elway era ended, so they’ve decided to start a new Elway era by bringing him back into the organization as Vice President of Operations. The hall of fame quarterback will head all matters for the team and his first duty will be getting a new a new head coach. First on the list is his alma mater’s current head coach, Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh. Should Harbaugh be turn down the offer, look for Elway to bring in his back-up from his playing days, Gary Kubiak, who is likely to be let go by the Texans. He'll also be in charge of the Broncos draft where this year they will be picking second overall.

Big Ten Awful vs SEC, Can Ohio State Change Perception Against Arkansas?

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

After their collective New Years day performance, the Big Ten conference should rename their new divisions “Phonies” and “Frauds” rather than “Legends“ and “Leaders“. Their 0-5 performance against three SEC teams, a Big-12 team and a Mountain West team was one of the biggest displays of a conference melt down ever seen. There were only six games on New Years day, and the Big Ten lost five of them.

Against the SEC alone, they were outscored 138-45 with Michigan State getting blasted by Alabama, Michigan allowing the most points ever in their bowl history against Mississippi State and Penn State falling to Florida. Making matters look even worse for the conference was their newest member for the 2011 season, Nebraska, falling to Washington as a 14-point favorite.

So what does that say for the leader of the conference, Ohio State, as they matchup against another SEC team Tuesday night with Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl? The Buckeyes are 3 ½-point favorites, but they’re playing in the heart of SEC country and have faltered over the years when playing BCS bowls against SEC teams like LSU and Florida over the years. In fact, they have lost none straight bowls when playing SEC teams.

Thus far throughout the Bowl season the Big Ten is 2-5 in bowls after going 4-3 last year which included big wins by the conference leaders with Ohio State beating PAC-10 Champion Oregon and Iowa taking care of the ACC Champion Georgia Tech. By the looks of how co-leaders Wisconsin and Michigan State looked, it’s hard to make a case for the Buckeyes and just how good they really are. True, they are 11-1 and Arkansas and 10-2, but beating up on Big Ten teams now seems to be less of an achievement after watching all those teams they beat get exposed.

When looking at Arkansas’ only two losses -- to then No. 1 Alabama and current No. 1 Auburn -- and seeing how strong they closed out the season, they kind of get higher marks now on the basis of the SEC proving conference supremacy over the Big Ten. During the year, the Razorbacks put up the fourth most passing yards in the nation and averaged 37.3 point-per-game led by quarterback Ryan Mallett. On top of the potent aerial attack, they also come strong with 150 rushing yards per game with an attack that will give the Buckeyes some trouble. The only team the Buckeyes faced this year that comes close to Arkansas’ attack was Wisconsin and they lost that game 31-18.

On top of all the history and statistics, the Buckeyes also have a cloud hanging over them due to five players being suspended for the first five games next season, yet are allowed to play in this bowl game. One of the players involved, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, has had to deal with all the questions about the matter on a daily basis. How focused will he be for this game, and even if he is, will it matter? Pryor has been good in games when getting an early lead, but he has been one of the absolute worst in the country when trying to lead his team back from a deficit.

I had initially liked the Buckeyes in this match when the pairings came out and after pounding on the point that the SEC is much better, it may sound like I have changed my mind, but I haven’t. When comparing all the Big Ten bowl losses, all those teams were supposed to lose according to the ratings where they were all considerable underdogs with Wisconsin playing perhaps the best team in the Nation as 3-point underdogs. The Illinois and Iowa wins for the conference were basically pick ‘em games. I’m going to stay with the trend of following the power ratings and take the team rated higher. In this case it is Ohio State, who I initially had as 6-point favorites in my own personal ratings. On a side note, Mallett once played for Michigan as a freshman and participated in a 14-3 loss to the Buckeyes. Pick: Ohio State 37-23

Later in the week, we get to pick on another MAC team taking Middle Tennessee State who opened as a 2-point underdog, but are now minus-1 against Miami-Ohio. On Friday, I’ll be looking to bet on LSU over Texas A&M. Then on Saturday, I’ll hope that line drops more on Nevada against Boston College in a game being played in San Francisco. The Wolf pack opened as a 9 ½-point favorite but have been bet against dropping the line to minus-7 ½ at most sports books.

As for the big game between No. 2 Oregon and No. 1 Auburn on Monday, I’m kind of torn between the two and fully expect to see lots of points scored eclipsing the posted total of 74 ½. Between the two teams, they have combined to score 92.3 points-per-game and neither of the defenses have been tough to score on. On one side, you have Auburn’s huge offensive and defensive lines against the smaller Ducks, but the speed of the Oregon will be something Auburn hasn’t seen all year. Pick: Auburn 44 Oregon 39

College Basketball

Seven teams still remain unbeaten heading into this week led by No. 1 Duke. Because the ACC looks to be weaker compared to years past, they have the easiest chance to run the table. Duke was the only team ranked from the conference in last weeks coaches poll with only Florida State getting a single vote among the 11 other teams. In the RPI index, only North Carolina is among the top 20 teams with Duke rated 13th because of a poor strength of schedule rating, ranked 131st. Next Wednesday Duke travels to Tallahassee for a date against the Seminoles which could give them a scare. However, the once tough tobacco road jaunts are no longer a feared gauntlet. Following the Florida State game, Duke plays only two non-conference opponents, at St. John’s and a visit from Temple.

No. 3 Kansas has the top RPI rating and will have a tough time staying undefeated during conference play on the road as the Big-12 has five other teams ranked. No. 2 Ohio State has five other teams ranked in the Big Ten while No. 4 Syracuse has six other ranked teams to face in the Big East, the toughest conference nightly in basketball. One of the Big East teams not even ranked is still undefeated with Cincinnati, although they have played a very weak non-conference schedule heading into Big East play this week.

No. 6 San Diego State begins conference play this week and then get their first test next week when they host UNLV (12-2) followed by a road date at the always tough “Pit” at New Mexico (11-3).

UNLV tips off it’s conference play against No. 16 BYU (14-1) at the Thomas & Mack center Wednesday night in a game that will be BYU’s last visit to Las Vegas as a Mountain West member. It should be a rocking atmosphere and give further insight to just how good UNLV is at this juncture. The task at hand for them will be trying to control Senior guard Jimmer Fredette who is sizzling hot right now averaging 24 points-per-game on the season and 28 ppg in December.

When looking at the RPI conference ratings, it’s interesting to see the MWC as the fifth rated conference ahead of the Atlantic-10, PAC-10, Conf-USA and SEC.

The game of the week features No. 8 Connecticut at No. 13 Texas in the one of only two games this week that feature two ranked teams playing each other. The Long Horns have won five straight games after a December 5 meltdown at USC led by the play of sophomore Jordan Hamilton who has averaged 19.8 ppg and 7.2 rebounds-per-game. While Hamilton leads the team in scoring, his high total for rebounds is only third best on the team, a team that is third in the nation with 43 boards per game.

They’ll matchup against a team almost as greedy on the boards as them in Connecticut who is fifth in the nation. After losing their final four games of last season and relegated to playing in the NIT, the Huskies have stormed back this year as one of the biggest surprises of the season led by Junior guard Kemba Walker who leads the nation in scoring with 26.7 ppg. Both teams each lost to Pittsburgh and beat Michigan State this year as common opponents. Look for the home court edge to give Texas a boost in this one with a five point win.

Eagles Reid Doesn't Say So, But It Looks Like He'll Be Resting Playing Against Dallas

By Jeff McLane
Inquirer Staff Writer

Even stone-faced Andy Reid couldn't mask the obvious.

The Eagles' coach wouldn't come out and say that he was resting most of his starters in Sunday's regular-season finale. But with a number of significant regulars injured; with the team coming off a short week; and, most important, with the first round of the playoffs looming, Reid will use an otherwise-meaningless game against the Cowboys to give his reserves some extra playing time.

"Your roster's not big enough where you can" sit every starter, Reid said Friday behind a devilish grin. "You have to be careful."

Reid wouldn't even declare Michael Vick out, even though the quarterback didn't take a practice repetition all week. Kevin Kolb did and will start, team sources have confirmed. Vick suffered a bruised thigh on Tuesday against the Vikings. While Vick is officially listed as questionable for Dallas, of greater concern is how ready he'll be in a week.

"He's making progress, and that's a plus," Reid said.

The NFC East champion Eagles have the No. 3 seed locked up and will face one of three teams - the Packers, Giants, or Buccaneers - on either Jan. 8 or 9. A Saturday game would mean the Eagles, who had the Minnesota game controversially pushed back two days, would have to play three games in 12 days.

"They're aware of it, the crazy schedule there," Reid said of the NFL schedulers. "I'm sure they're taking it into consideration."

An extra day of rest would benefit not only Vick, who has taken a beating this season, but several other Eagles. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson (foot), cornerback Asante Samuel (knee), tackle Winston Justice (knee), and defensive tackle Trevor Laws (shoulder/chest) also didn't practice this week.

Put in this position before, Reid has always elected to rest most of his starters. His decision this time was clouded by a woeful effort against Minnesota in which the Eagles bungled away any hope of a first-round bye.

"We had too many penalties, substitutions were off, and that's my responsibility to get that right," Reid said. "And so, we're aware of that now, now we just have to make sure we do it right and get it straight."

Reid had to weigh the possibility of going into the postseason off a two-game losing streak against resting his regulars. He chose the latter even though the 5-10 Cowboys, out of the playoff picture, are expected to play full-speed.
