Are the Browns really the worst team in NFL?

Robert Griffin III is doing all the right things in camp.
Are the Cleveland Browns really the worst team in the NFL?

If looking at odds board all along the Las Vegas strip, the answer is yes. And there's lots of recent history to support the notion.

The Browns haven't had a winning record since 2007 (10-6) and they haven't made the playoffs since losing a Wild Card game in 2002. They come off an awful 3-13 season finishing dead last in the AFC North for the fifth consecutive year.

So it's not hard to understand why the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has them listed as the longest shot to win the Super Bowl at 200/1 -- double the next longest odds -- and also the lowest season win total at 4.5 (Over -155) -- the next lowest is Tennessee and San Francisco at 5.5 victories.

The crew at the CG Technology sport book hub office inside M Resort also don't have a high rating on the 2016 version of the Browns. They posted the first 16 weeks of spreads for every team in April and the Browns weren't favored in any of them. Not even one home game. The smallest spread placed upon them is a Week 16 game where the Chargers are 2-point road favorites.

CG has the Browns as their lowest rated team, just a point worse than Tennessee who are 3.5-point favorites in a Week 6 matchup in Nashville. If going by last year's awful numbers, the rating is hard to argue against as their average score was 17-27. They couldn't stop the run or pass on defense and their offense was almost as bad.

But action for Week 1 has actually come in on the Browns.

"One of the biggest moves we've had in Week 1 has seen the Browns drop from +8.5 to +6.5 at Philadelphia," said CG Technology's VP of risk management Jason Simbal. "But I don't think those wagers on the Browns were necessarily because of bettors liking them as much as they don't like the Eagles. There's a lot of anti-Eagles sentiment with smart money. One (respected) bettor bet against the Eagles in 13 of their 16 games we have have posted. And it doesn't just stop there with weekly games.

2016 NFL season win totals posted in Las Vegas

CG Technology sports book at The Venetian.
LAS VEGAS -- CG Technology sports books posted 2016 NFL season win totals Thursday afternoon with no team higher than 10.5 wins and a low total of 4.5 on Cleveland. The NFL announced in early January all the home-and-away opponents all 32 teams will play, but when they play on the schedule won't be known until April.

From a scheduling standpoint, here is the breakdown of which divisions face each other in interconference action:
-- AFC East vs. NFC West
-- AFC North vs. NFC East
-- AFC South vs. NFC North
-- AFC West vs. NFC South

Here are the divisions that match up with each other for four games within their respective conferences:
-- AFC East vs. AFC North
-- AFC South vs. AFC West
-- NFC East vs. NFC North
-- NFC South vs. NFC West

The five teams set at 10.5 wins are Carolina (UN -130), Green Bay (-115), New England(OV-120), Pittsburgh (UN -125) and Seattle (-125).

The next highest total was set at 9.5 wins with Arizona (OV -120), Cincinnati (-115) andDenver (UN -120)

The Broncos still don't know who is going to quarterback the team. Peyton Manning and John Elway had a two-hour conversation earlier in the week to discuss the future, but it's still likely Manning won't take another snap for Denver. Brock Osweiler is a free-agent and could opt to leave for big money elsewhere which would leave the Super Bowl champs with a huge question mark at the most important position.

In addition to six games against AFC West opponents, Denver will have home games against Houston, Indianapolis, New England Atlanta and Carolina. They'll play road games at Jacksonville, Tennessee, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Tampa Bay. The Broncos have won 12 games or more in each of the past four seasons.

Super Bowl 50 Prediction from Las Vegas

Can a case be made for the Broncos to win? Let's try.....
If you like Carolina to cover six points against the Broncos, we certainly can't fault you. They're good. Real good. As in the type of good that might have us remembering some of the great Super Bowl champs of the past the week prior to their eventual crowning moments. They've beaten teams by an average of almost 13 points a game, which has helped bettors cash against the spread in 13 of their 18 games.

What's not to like? They've got a quarterback in Cam Newton who accounted for 50 touchdowns this season, beating all but one of the teams he faced with a combination of both his arm and legs. His running ability has helped the team rush for over 100 yards in 31 straight games.

Newton rarely turns the ball over and the Broncos defense forces them often, which helped Carolina to an NFL-leading plus-20 turnover ratio during the regular season, and then tacked on a impressive plus-8 in two playoff games. You can't predict turnovers, but that theory is tested strongly with Carolina because they win that battle almost every week — 13 of 18 games.

The Panthers led the NFL in scoring, and took it up a notch higher during the playoffs by hanging 80 points against two of the better defenses in the league — Seattle, then Arizona, teams considered by most oddsmakers to be the top two rated in football.

How in the world can Denver stay in this game?

2016 AFC Championship Game: Patriots -3 (EV) at Broncos

Tom Brady LOVES pressure; faces No. 1 defense with No. 1 sack total
3:05 pm ET - TV: CBS
New England (13-4, 8-7-2 ATS) at Denver (13-4, 8-8-1 ATS)
Line: New England -3 (-120), 44

LAS VEGAS -- Let’s just start by saying that ratings-wise, the Broncos should be favored. That’s simply the approach from an oddsmaker position where we don’t believe the Patriots are 6-points better than Denver, and that’s what the number is telling us if taking out the 3-points for Denver’s home field.

However, bookmakers need to factor in public perception. The additional rating points added to New England for the AFC Championship Game are because of the public, which always believes what it saw last.

The books have to forecast who is going to be bet the most and go against the oddsmaker position, especially in games with such high volume. Sharp money pales in comparison to the amount Joe Public throws down on these games. And so far the books look to be right — 75 percent of bets have come in on the Pats -3.

But that doesn’t mean we have to follow the herd at the bet windows. You’re looking at nearly 5-points of value by taking the Broncos at home, which is one of the best home field advantages in NFL history. The home field for Denver has been so good through the years that the great Tom Brady is only 2-6 when playing in the Rockies, and his two wins came against third-stringer Danny Kanell and Tim Tebow.

To show the Patriots' huge ratings increase after last week, let’s take a look at a few recent games with similar spreads.
