Las Vegas books experience major loss in NFL Week 15

Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook control room.
After nine straight NFL Sunday’s of getting beat by the Las Vegas sports books, bettors exacted revenge in Week 15 with a furious assault on the posted numbers that led to a massive losing day for the house while turning it into a great Christmas gift for the masses. .

“Our worst day of the year,” said CG Technology VP of risk management Jason Simbal. “We got stuck big with parlays.“

It was almost as if St. Nick himself had been watching the one-sided relationship between NFL bettors and the sports books the past two months and had seen enough of the little guy getting pushed around. Coal in the stocking for the naughty and greedy sports books while the public get cheer and jolly for Christmas.

By no means are the books to be painted out as some kind of villain or Grinch, because all they do is post the numbers and let bettors choose who they want.

It’s pretty simple, the books set the numbers on all the games and you give them money and then pick one side or the other. But where the books make all their money throughout the year is the exotic wagers such as parlays, where a bettor can make a lot for a small amount wagered by tying a couple team together.

Betting parlays was a profitable strategy early on in the season when the public won three of the first five weeks. But after the books ironed out the numbers with five weeks of data, the popular public teams were tougher to win with weekly.

Does Steelers -7 seem too high against Broncos No. 1 defense?

What's the proper number on Steelers-Broncos game?
Last week the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook opened the Steelers (8-5) as 4.5-point home favorites over the Broncos (10-3) in their Early Week 15 lines suggesting they had Pittsburgh rated 1.5-points higher than the Broncos. Following the Week 14 games, that rating differential doubled.

“The Steelers would be -3 or -3.5 on a neutral field so -6 at Pittsburgh was the right number,” said SuperBook vice-president Jay Kornegay, who re-opened the game Sunday night at -6. “I actually think -5 is closer to being the right number. Minus-7 might be a little excessive.”

But that’s where his betting public forced the number. On Friday morning the SuperBook moved Pittsburgh from -6.5 to -7 EVEN while most of the city sits at -6.5.

“The Steelers rating has climbed just over the past week while Denver’s has dropped. The Broncos have a good defense, but its offense can’t run or protect the quarterback. They scored 12 last week and 17 the week before against two lousy defenses (Oakland, San Diego).”

Pittsburgh has the league’s No. 2 offense at 404 yards-per-game while Denver has the No. 1 ranked defense allowing only 272 yards per game, which is 35 yards less a game than No. 2 ranked Seattle.
Last week's game at Denver was a complete mystery. The Raiders, down 12-0 at halftime, ended up winning 15-12 with only 126 yards of total offense. The Broncos threw the ball 51 times and ran it only 21 times for 34 yards, an odd ratio for a team that led most of the game. And, Oakland's Khalil Mack sacked Broncos QB Brock Osweiler five times.

Bengals Super Bowl odds drop with loss of Dalton

Wildfire Lanes sports book on Sunset.
With Andy Dalton lost for at least the rest of the regular season to a thumb injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers, the Bengals’ odds to win Super Bowl 50 have been fattened to 25-to-1 at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. The Steelers’ chances to win it all, conversely, have been boosted considerably, according to the oddsmakers.

The Steelers, who beat the Bengals 33-20 in Cincinnati on Sunday, had their Super Bowl odds shortened to 6-to-1 at the Westgate, which makes them the co-fourth favorites to win it all, behind only the Patriots, Panthers and Cardinals. Pittsburgh is now the 2-to-1 second choice to win the AFC, and the Bengals have been dropped to fourth at 12-to-1 odds.

Despite Patriots win, Vegas books show small profit in Week 14

Saturday at MGM Grand sports book before UFC 194
LAS VEGAS -- Prior to the Patriots dropping its second straight game to temporarily put them in the No. 3 position, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook had them as the massive 5/2 favorites (Bet $100 to win $250) to win the Super Bowl. After the loss, they fell into a tie with the undefeated Panthers at 4/1 odds. On Monday, with New England back in the drivers seat for home field advantage and with tight end Rob Gronkowski back in action, the Westgate dropped them back down to 7/2 as the lone favorite.

Last week the Patriots were looking at being the AFC’s No. 3 seed in the playoffs as they stumbled through their first two losses of the season. However, following losses by both Cincinnati and Denver in Sunday‘s Week 14 action, coupled with the Patriots 24-9 win at Houston in the late game, it’s the Patriots once again in control their own destiny with the No. 1 seed with three more games to play before the playoffs start.

Bettors all had a feeling that the Patriots wouldn’t lose three straight games and they came strong on them laying -3 all the way up to -4.5. William Hill sports books had 85 percent of the tickets written on the game on them as well as 89 percent of the overall cash wagered, which was by far the most one sided action of the day and took a big chunk of the profit the sports books had tucked away after grinding out the first 13 games.

“We ended up being a small winner, but it wasn’t a great day,” said Boyd gaming sports book director Bob Scucci prior to the Patriots win. “We had a lot of great two-way handle on each of the games and the games we had big public action on (parlays) we seemed to have sharp action on the other side so they both kind of balanced each other out.“

Scucci wasn’t lucky enough to have sharps balance out the risk on the Houston side like they did with so many other popular public games. He said the Patriots covering would mean giving back about half of what they had won on the day, but the game staying UNDER 46 would help.

Cubs favored to win 2016 World Series; Diamondbacks respected by Vegas

Sensational race and sports book design at Green Valley Ranch.
LAS VEGAS -- The four-day MLB Winter Meetings from Opryland in Nashville have come and gone. Thursday was the final day of the sessions, during which baseball executives mingle with each other, create relationships and try to improve their teams via trades. The agents for 134 free agents negotiated to get their clients the biggest payday, or in some cases, just put in the best situation.

Las Vegas sports books have been keeping their eyes on the happenings in order to adjust team ratings and futures odds. There aren’t any games posted for wagering yet, but betting on the World Series and pennants has been open at most books since the end of October.

“We’re just watching the wire and looking at each team on a case-by-case basis,” said Station Casinos sports book director Jason McCormick of his staff‘s routine during the meetings.

“David Price (Red Sox) and Zack Greinke (Diamondbacks) were the major players requiring adjustments to both the team they left for and arrived from.”

Holiday,NFR, no college football slows Week 14 betting action

Bellagio Conservatory festive in Vegas
The Chiefs have won and covered six straight games which is normally a sign that bettors will be jumping all over whatever spread is offered on its next game, but that’s not necessarily the case this week as the Chiefs are 10.5-point home favorites over the Chargers.

South Point sports book director Bert Osborne says enthusiasm for the Chiefs has slowed at his books this week for a couple of reasons.

“No matter how good a team is doing, when you put double digits on the board, it scares people off the game, or at least with the favorite. Bettors just don’t want to include double-digit favorites on their eight-team parlays.

“We’re also seeing business slow as usual at this time of year because of the holiday season. Maybe if this same situation with Kansas City were to occur last month, it would be a different story, but the betting public is usually cautious about laying double-digits.

This is the first week with no big college football games which will make Friday night and Saturday morning sports book traffic come to a crawl compared to the last 15 weeks. Couple that with bettors readying themselves for holiday spending, they’re being a bit frugal at the bet windows.

“We’ve been so jammed with the NFR (National Finals Rodeo) in town that we’re not getting our regular betting crowd, and then we’ve only got one college game Saturday (Army-Navy), so I don’t expect to see too much action on any of these (NFL) games until Saturday night and Sunday morning.”

Big Favorites losing helps books to Week 13 win

Teaser bettors burned by Patriots and Bears losing outright.
The sports books have all kinds of ways to make money on an NFL Sunday against the betting public, but the surest way of all is to get a couple of the big favorites to lose outright and in Week 13, two of the biggest numbers went down.

“The Patriots losing turned out to be our best game of the day,” said South Point sports book director Bert Osborne. “We had give back a lot on the Eagles money-line just to balance out some of the teaser money we had extended on the Patriots, but it still turned out to be our best decision.”

The Eagles actually looked like the team we all thought they were during the preseason with its impressive 35-28 win at New England, a score that really wasn’t that close. Tom Brady and the Patriots offense continue to show the effects of not having all their key starters.

On Sunday, both tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Julian Edelman were out. The Patriots have now failed to cover its past four games, which not so ironically started with the Giants game which is when Edelman got hurt. Coupled with their Week 12 loss at Denver, Sunday’s defeat was the Patriots first of the back-to-back nature since 2012.

“After that,” Osborne continued, “the next best game was in the morning with the 49ers beating the Bears, who were one of the most popular teams with parlays.“

The 49ers improbable 26-20 win at Chicago, led by Blaine Gabbert showing everyone he has all kinds of athletic skills and can lead a team to victory just like he did with such regularity in college. Gabbert had been labeled as the worst back-up in the league, but he came up with his best NFL performance that included a 44-yard TD run in the late fourth quarter to tie it up 20-20 and then in overtime he threw a beautiful deep ball down the left sideline to Torrey Smith that covered 71-yards for the game winning TD.

With two of the biggest underdogs cashing and killing off a large chunk of the parlay and teaser risk and then also getting the Saints to cover 6-points at home against new public favorite Carolina, you might think the books had one of their better weekends, but that wasn’t the case.

NFL Week 10 line movement from Las Vegas

South Point sports books is always hopping with action.
There are 12 games on Sunday's NFL Week 10 schedule, but South Point sports book director Bert Osborne has his attention focused on two games that he knows will have a big impact on whether his books across Las Vegas win or lose.

"We took some wise-guy action on the Lions at +11.5," said Osborne, "but we're overloaded on parlays already with the Packers at about a 10-to-1 ratio (cash taken in) that's going to make a Packers cover have a lingering effect on the entire day."

What Osborne is talking about is the parlay tidal wave effect of one root game that can do the most damage. If Green Bay covers, he banks the Lions straight bet action from the wise guys, but the multiplying parlay odds of Packers action live on for the rest of the day and even into Monday night. If some of the other popular public teams come cashing in as well, it'll be a long Sunday for the books.

"Volume-wise, the game that has taken the most action has been the Giants-Patriots game," said Osborne who has the Patriots as 7-point home favorites. "The straight bet action has been good and we're not too overloaded on either side, but the teaser wagers have been through the roof on the Patriots and the parlays have come in at just over a 5-to-1 ratio on the Patriots. This is going to be a big game for us."

Even more so if the Packers cover earlier in the day.

So not only does Osborne have to root for the Giants to cover, for the sake of his teaser action, his book will need the Giants to win straight up to eliminate that risk. Surprisingly, he said the Packers, despite being a big favorite, aren't a big teaser game and that they've had good two way action on it.

"The Patriots seem to be tied into almost every teaser," said Osborne. "The next two biggest teaser games for us is the Panthers and Rams."

Just a quick back story: Osborne was always a favorite of NFL teaser bettors in Las Vegas when he offered 6-point two-team teasers while at Coast Resorts at only EVEN money and he always took big bets. After continually seeing the two-team teaser be one of the lowest earners -- sometimes a regular loser -- he adjusted his teaser pay chart up to -110 and then to -120 about eight years ago, which is still the best odds in the city -- most books start at -130.

NFL Week 8 Line Moves from Vegas: Packers backed big time at Denver

Lots of interest in Sunday night's game.
LAS VEGAS -- The Sunday Night Football game with Green Bay visiting Denver has just about everything you could want in a regular season game beginning with both teams being undefeated at 6-0. You've got two marquee quarterbacks and two defenses that rank statistically as the best in the league. However, when you look at the betting patterns across Las Vegas sports books, it's clear who the public likes in this game and it isn't the home team.

Denver has one of the better home field advantages in football, and the wise guys have been there to scoop up +3-flat with Denver at places like the South Point when it was available Monday through Thursday, but the public is siding with the Packers no matter what the number is.

"Our biggest parlay game of the week so far is Arizona at about a 10-to-1 ratio (cash taken) and next is the Packers at 8-to-1," said South Point sports book director Bert Osborne.

The Cardinals are fast becoming America's (betting) favorites weekly and they're laying 'only' 5-points with them on the road at Cleveland. However, it's very telling how the public feels about Denver when the Broncos are at home -- a trend they loved the past three seasons -- and they still like laying points with the road team.

Who can blame them? Green Bay has covered five of six this season with a QB that has a 15-to-2 TD/INT ratio while Denver's QB has a 7-to-10 ratio that includes three pick-6s. Still, Denver is 4-2 ATS thanks to its own defense that has returned four turnovers for TDs. The public obviously thinks that is more about luck than talent, and maybe they're right.

The big difference with the top two public games is that almost three times the amount bet on parlays off the board have been on Green Bay compared to Arizona. It's already a big event on a Friday. With this being the final "get-back" game of the day, that number will only rise as most bettors stagger their bank-rolls by start times. In quite a few cases, the late game cash wagered comes from the ATM with hopes of salvaging some kind of profit on the day.

NFL Week 7 Vegas Moves: Are Panthers Really this Good?

Who are the betting in Las Vegas this week?
LAS VEGAS -- Perhaps the most interesting game of the week is Sunday night when Philadelphia plays at Carolina (-3) where there's a couple of questions bettors have to answer before going to the bet window. Are the Eagles really back to being who we thought they were and are the Panthers really as good as they're showing?

The Eagles have won its last two games despite quarterback Sam Bradford throwing five interceptions. Does that mean they're resilient, or does that mean they just played bad teams and got lucky? Can we really call two solid performances against the suspect Saints and Giants a true fix of the issues that plagued them in bad losses to the Falcons, Cowboys and Redskins?

Carolina (5-0) is one of five undefeated teams left in the NFL and have exceeded its rating by covering four of the five games, including a huge come from behind 27-23 win at Seattle last week. Are they overachieving or has QB Cam Newton finally come of age and ready to take his team rating into the upper-echelon of the league?

Las Vegas oddsmaker Kenny White doesn't think so, at least not yet. "They may be 5-0, but I still have about 13 teams rated higher than them, including the Eagles who I have almost 4 points better."

If White's rating assessment is correct, then the Eagles should actually be favored in this one. But that's where the public perception comes into play that sometimes trumps actual ratings.

Last week the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook had the Panthers as 2 ½-point favorites for this game in their Week 7 Early lines, which shows they thought Philadelphia to be a half-point better at that juncture before Carolina's upset win at Seattle as a seven-point road underdog. That goes a long way in the public's mind, and so far through Friday, they're firing away on the Panthers this week, which makes -3 the correct number no matter what any rating shows.

Colts back-door TD good for Las Vegas

Books do well in Week 6 NFL action.
After sweating through 11 games in Sunday's NFL Week 6 action, most of the bettors’ success at the end of the day hinged on the “Deflategate” rematch between the Patriots andColts. There had been some give and take by both the sports books and bettors as they each won a few of the many thrilling games on the day, but the big payoff for both sides would come down to whether or not the Patriots would cover as 8 ½-points at Indianapolis.

"The Colts make or break the day for us," said Station Casinos sports book director Jason McCormick just as the game kicked off. "We're loaded on the Pats and hoping they come out deflated."

Deflated they would not be, but it took lots of nail biting by books and bettors and the spread was coming into play. The books looked like they were in shape on the Colts first when they would march down the field in a an impressive opening score and then were leading 21-20 at the half, but then the Patriots defense tightened up and held a 34-21 lead until Indianapolis got the back-door cover touchdown with 1:19 to go.

"That last touchdown by the Colts was good news for us. We had got as high as 10 with the Patriots," said the Stratosphere's Hugh Citron.

The good news for the house almost quickly turned into miraculous news for holders on Patriots bets as the ensuing on-side kick was nearly converted into a Rob Gronkowski TD. It was a moment in every sports book crowd where the audience collectively held their breath and the ultimate bettors' dream almost turned into reality. Gronkowski, in as part of the good hands team, jumped out to secure the kick for the Patriots and appeared to have a clear run down the sideline until accidently stepping out of bounds. The Gronk really looked as though he wanted that score.

The win moved the Patriots to 5-0 on the season and joined the Panthers, Broncos (6-0), Bengals (6-0) and Packers (6-0) as the only remaining undefeated teams. The Panthers and Bengals would be the only one of those teams to cover the number on Sunday, and for Cincinnati, who is now 5-0-1 ATS, they are becoming a thorn in the sports books side as bettors are flocking to a team that just keeps covering. On Sunday, the Bengals (-3) turned a close game at Buffalo into a 34-21 rout.

CG Technologies vice-president of risk management Jason Simbal described his books' day as "decent" and said their worst games was the Bengals and that they "actually needed Seattle."

Stations' McCormick said the day was "solid but not great as the Bills and Redskins let them down."

The Stratosphere had a similar story with the first 11 games.

Las Vegas sports books luck out with strong 49ers performance

Everyone had the afternoon 3-teamer at the South point book.
A three-team parlay pays 6/1 odds (Bet $100 to win $600) in Las Vegas and during Sunday's NFL Week 5 action almost everyone in town had a winning three-team combination in the afternoon games with the favorites of Arizona, New England and Denver covering.

“You just have to win one of those late game and things would be okay. Just one,” said theStratosphere's Hugh Citron.

All three of those favorites would cover the number and it set the books up with a huge risk figure heading into Sunday night's football game with the Giants as seven-point home favorites over the 49ers.

No one wanted the 49ers. Huge parlays were waiting to cash if the Giants beat down the traveling 49ers like everyone else had this season. Two San Francisco road games this season; average score: 12-45.

“We're looking at nearly a seven-figure loss on the day if the Giants cover with the OVER mixed in with the Rangers and OVER in pro baseball,” said MGM Resorts CP of race and sports Jay Rood as the late game was just getting started.

Following the Giants 30-27 win (no cover) and the Blue Jays 5-1 win in the ALDS, Rood and the rest of the sports book directors around town could take a deep breath of relief having just dodged a bullet. It still turned out to be a loss on the day, but it wasn't a complete disaster.

Things could have been much worse as the perfect storm was brewing with the public riding several popular teams.

Three squads -- Green Bay, Atlanta,Cincinnati – entered Week 5 with perfect 4-0 marks against the spread. Only the Packers would cover on the day among the three, but the timing of the late games and only three teams to choose from had everyone on the same parlay and books can't escape a 6/1 payout odds no matter how much wise guy money they might get on the other side.

The public had a no-brainer three-teamer in the afternoon. "Let's see. Three games kicking off after 1:00 p.m. PT, huh? Hmm, Arizona should kill the Lions. The Cowboys have no shot against the Patriots and Denver has beat the tar out of Oakland seven straight games. Yes, I'll have a three-team parlay for $20, please."

That type of betting sequence was happening all over Las Vegas from 12:30 to 1:05 pm on Sunday and for the third time in five weeks it was enough to beat the books. That's crazy stuff. The books don't lose in football consistently, but going 2-3 against the public is a pretty big deal in Las Vegas. The casino bean counters are now getting snarkier with their comments in weekly executive meetings.

I guess the comeback comment would be "at least I didn't lose $1 million."

Free College Football Picks: Iowa to continue its roll vs. Illinois

Illinois should have another rough day on road.
Line: Iowa -11
Total: 44
Time: 12 p.m. ET, ESPNU

The Hawkeyes have been a pleasant surprise so far at 5-0 (4-1 ATS), and there are a few trends to help sway the opinion that they keep their roll going at home on Saturday. The big one is Illinois being awful on the road. The Illini don't just lose, they rarely cover the spread, going 3-14 ATS in their last 17 road trips. Also, the home team in this series is 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings, and the favorite is 9-3 ATS in the past 12 meetings.

More important than the trends, Iowa's true rating might not have found them yet, which makes laying the points in this spot a good play.

Pick: Iowa - 11
Predicted score: Iowa 31-10

Vegas sports books bounce back in NFL Week 4 action

Caesars Palace sports book was hopping for week 4 NFL action.
LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada sports books had lost two of the first three NFL Sunday's and needed a boost to kickoff the start of the fiscal fourth quarter after failing miserably in the third quarter with a rough baseball season. The NFL season was supposed to be the savior for the books, but it turned out to be just the opposite.

So when book directors were looking at the risk charts for NFL Week 4 action, they saw seven teams they needed to beat down as the gateway to a winning week, and those seven teams had combined to go 17-4 (81%) against the spread through three weeks. They were the popular teams. They were the teams blowing everyone out, covering spreads and making every regular betting Joe's wallet fat.

Seven Public Teams in Week 4
Carolina
Atlanta
Oakland
Philadelphia
Denver
Green Bay
Arizona

If the books were to lose five of those games, a losing day would occur. If they lost six of those games, it would be a disaster. If they lost all seven, it would be 'Black Sunday' with almost every big parlay cashing.

However, things cycled around as they usually do in pro football where the point spread eventually catches up with teams. The books would end up winning four of the seven games the public loved and it was enough of a hiccup in the popular parlay across town to make the books a winner.

"Solid day for the book," said Station Casinos sports book director Jason McCormick.
"The Jets and Dolphins all made us get up early, but it was worth it for the public who cashed on the Jets. The Bears, Redskins, Rams and Vikings were all good for the books."

The sports books barely blinked when Jay Cutler was announced as the Bears starting quarterback where the Raiders ended up closing as 3-point road favorites. But Cutler actually showed some heart and emotion in a 22-20 win. The Raiders were 2-1 ATS before the game while the Bears were 0-3 ATS. The Raiders are fun, the Bears stink and that's the way the public bet it.

Free Monday Night Football Pick: Lions at Seahawks

The Lions travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks on Monday night (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN), their first trip to CenturyLink Field since suffering a 32-20 loss as 10.5-point dogs in 2009. The Lions are not only winless, they're also 0-3 against the spread to start 2015, while the Seahawks are looking to win their 10th Monday night game in a row.

Line: Seahawks -10, Total: 43

Line movement: The reigning NFC champions sat as 10-point favorites at multiple Las Vegas bet shops about 24 hours before kickoff, with some venues dealing -9.5. The total, meanwhile, is holding firm at 43 after a slight adjustment from 43.5 on Tuesday. Check our odds page for current point spreads and totals.

Trends that matter: The UNDER is 10-4 in the Lions’ last 14 Monday games….The Seahawks are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 Monday games, including 8-1 in the last nine….The Lions are 1-7 ATS in their last eight road games....Detroit has lost its last 11 against the spread visiting an NFC West opponent.

FREE NFL Week 4 Picks: Panthers to beat Bucs fifth straight time

Panthers usually handle Tampa Bay and should again on Sunday.
Line: Carolina -3 (-120), Total: 40
Time: 1 p.m. ET, Fox

The Panthers have had an easy go of it, getting off to a 3-0 start against teams with issues. By no means have they looked great, which is why they’re laying just a field goal at Tampa Bay this week. But they do just enough to get the job done, and that should be enough to beat the Bucs for the fifth straight time (3-1 ATS).

The past three meetings have stayed UNDER, and that looks to be the way to go here as well. Carolina has stayed UNDER in 10 of its past 12 against the NFC South, and the Bucs have stayed UNDER in 11 of their past 13 overall.

The plays are Panthers -3 and UNDER 40.

Predicted score: Panthers 20-10

NFL Week 4 Money Moves in Vegas; Cards may be undervalued

Arizona Cardinals could be underrated.
LAS VEGAS -- Move over Seattle, Green Bay and New England. The betting public has a new favorite team joining the group that's routinely featured the most on parlays across every sports book in the Las Vegas valley.

Meet the Arizona Cardinals who have jumped out to an impressive 3-0 start, but have endeared themselves more with the betting public by covering all three of its games by an average score of 42-16.

What's not to like about them? They don't just win and cover, they crush teams, and the games go OVER the total. It's a parlay bettors' side-to-total delight and the two-teamer at 13/5 odds (Bet $100 to win $260) is 3-0 with the Arizona-OVER combination this year.

The more bettors win on a team, the more they love them and they go for the ride as long as the roll goes. In Week 3 action, the Cardinals were the most one-sided wagered team of the week and were the major culprit of making the sports books losers on Sunday for the second time on the early season.

The question is whether or not Arizona's roll will last.

Are they for real?

Bettors are now having to lay larger numbers with Arizona as its rating has jumped about four points since the season began. In the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook’s early Week 4 lines last week the Cardinals were -4 for Sunday's home contest against the Rams. On Friday, the Cardinals were -7 (EVEN) after opening Sunday night at -6.

Is there too much of a rating adjustment on Arizona making their opponents more attractive for wise guys at the bet windows, or could the ratings still be low? One of the sharpest professional bettors in Las Vegas, Jeff Whitelaw, had a surprising take on the Cardinals and where they stack up among the rest of the teams.

"Before last week’s game, someone asked me who I thought the best teams in the NFL were and I said Green Bay, New England and then Arizona, and he was a little surprised by my answer. But you have to look at everything they're comprised of which is a great coach, solid defense, outstanding special teams play, an offensive line that is much better than expected and then a healthy Carson Palmer."

It's quite eye-opening to hear someone like Whitelaw mention Arizona before Seattle, a team the Westgate currently has as a six-point home favorites over the Cardinals for their Nov. 15 meeting in updated NFL Games of the Year numbers. It's an indication the Westgate currently has Seattle rated 2.5-points higher on a neutral field over Arizona.

"Right now, I think Arizona might be every bit as good as Seattle. The Seahawks have that pedigree and the Cardinals really haven't played anyone yet, but they're burying those teams that have been placed in front of them, and it's not like Arizona just snuck up on us. They were 11-5 last season with Palmer playing in only six games (6-0)."

Whitelaw says he expects Arizona's rating to climb even higher and there should still be value on them the next few weeks until its true rating levels off, which would then put them right up there the elite teams in the league.

Free Week 5 College Football Selections: Roll Tide between Hedges

Alabama and Georgia last met in 2012 SEC Title game.
Line: Georgia -2, Total: 54.5
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Will Alabama really start SEC play at 0-2 for the first time since 1990?

Nick Saban has recruited better than anyone over the past few seasons, yet still can't manage to get a top-flight quarterback into the program, which cost them dearly against Ole Miss. The field-goal kicking game has also been struggling. However, what they do well is control the ground game, and they should be able to neutralize Georgia running back Nick Chubb and put all the pressure on QB Greyson Lambert, who has looked outstanding thus far, but against opponents not nearly as good as Alabama.

Alabama is an underdog for the first time in 72 games, but calling Georgia the favorite is subjective and based on how big a home-field edge you give the Bulldogs between the hedges. There's a big difference between home-field value against South Carolina and against Alabama. When the Tide rolls into town, cut their opponents’ home rating in half. So while you might give Georgia +6 at home against South Carolina, the advantage may be only +2 to +3 against Alabama. And we have Alabama rated about 4-points better than Georgia on a neutral field, so by this logic, Alabama should be -1 on Saturday.

Look for the line to drop, so if you're on board with Alabama, get all you can on the money-line as soon as possible.

Predicted score: Alabama 38-24

Ravens-Steelers Thursday Night Selection: Vick starting is huge factor

Will Steelers tone down offensive playbook for Michael Vick?
The storylines are obvious when one of the NFL’s fiercest rivalries continues Thursday night (8:25 p.m. ET, CBS, NFLN). The Ravens, who had aspirations of another Super Bowl coming into the season, are 0-3 for the first time in franchise history. The Steelers have won two in a row since losing the season-opener at New England, but will have to rely on Michael Vick with starting QB Ben Roethlisberger out 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.

Line: Baltimore -2.5, Total: 44

Line movement: How big is the move from Roethlisberger to Vick? Pitt was a 3.5-point favorite when the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook posted this game a week in advance. After Sunday’s Week 3 action, the Ravens opened -2.5 at most Vegas books and have been bet to -3 (even) at some venues. The total has hovered around 44 and 44.5.

Bettors Hammer Vegas Books in NFL Week 3 Action

Bettors ride the hot teams to the cash window.
LAS VEGAS -- There were eight teams that were 2-0 against the spread coming into Week 3 and the betting public rode four of them strong in parlays coupled with two of their favorite weekly staples which made Sunday's NFL action a disaster for Las Vegas sports books.

"We lost every afternoon game after doing okay in the morning, but bettors cashed on the five to six games they really keyed on collectively," said MGM Resorts VP of race and sports Jay Rood just prior to kickoff of the Sunday night game after tabulating the damage from the first 13 games.

"The games we did okay on were the games that didn't attract as much attention." The Patriots to the OVER was a very popular combination in the morning and the Falcons coming back against Dallas made almost everyone in the book happy; the Steelers were also good for the players, and then in the afternoon, the combination of the Seahawks, Cardinals and Bills all covering kicked in all the big parlay payouts. The Bills were a game that both the sharps and public were on the same side."

The Falcons, Steelers and Cardinals are all 3-0 ATS now and the final piece to Sunday's equation was the Broncos in the Sunday night game at Detroit where the public had no problem laying 3-points with Denver, who had won and covered its first two games while the Lions had lost and failed to cover both their games.

Rood said they needed the Lions to somewhat salvage something on the day and had a double whammy in the evening with the late baseball game as bettors rode the Pirates eight-game winning streak.

The Cubs’ Jake Arrieta would come through for the books in a 4-0 Chicago Cubs win, but the risk in that game paled in comparison to the Broncos, which was ultimately the final nail in the coffin for the books as Denver's defense led the way in a 24-12 win.

The books can sometimes escape a week when three common teams come in for the public, but when five- team parlays come cashing in at 20/1 odds and six-teamers at 40/1 are a common occurrence, there is no way the house can recoup those losses.

Free NFL Week 3 Plays: Colts to bounce back at Tennessee

Lots of good games on the board to jump on this week.
Colts at Tennessee

In a situation similar to Philly's, the Colts' rating has come crashing down after an 0-2 start. Indy backers can lay a generous -3 (-120) against a Titans squad they have won and covered against seven straight times. Yes, the Colts offensive line is worse than we thought coming into the season, but they are still 9.5-points better than the Titans on a neutral field. If we give Tennessee +3 for home field, the spread should be Colts -6.5, which makes laying only a field goal very cheap.

Despite the bargain created by the overreaction, public bettors will be skeptical of laying any amount of points after losing on Indy in the first two weeks. That’s understandable, but let’s not ignore the data we had coming into the season that made Indy co-favorites to win the AFC. That team is still in the locker room, and we should expect to see that real Colts squad Sunday. Colts -3 (-120) is the play.

Predicted score: Colts 27-14

NFL Week 3 Betting Moves from Las Vegas

Jets are way over-inflated this week against Eagles.
LAS VEGAS -- Last week I talked about some overreactions to the Week 1 results which appeared to give value to a few underdogs in Week 2, five of which ended up not only covering the game, but also winning outright.

This week, the role has been reversed where a couple of underachieving 0-2 public favorites aren't laying as big a price that was posted at CG Technology books in April or at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook in its early Week 3 lines posted last Wednesday.

From the sports books point of view, they aren't just posting raw ratings. In addition to adjusting each teams' actual rating weekly, they also have to handicap what side the public will gravitate to, which is an art to itself. It's a case of supply and demand, and they're going to make you lay a larger price on teams you like and more against teams you're down on.

Last week the books knew the public hated Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Washington, Jacksonville and Oakland and all five underdogs ended up winning outright. It was one week after the public did very well picking against those same teams, and all the money they had won they gave right back to the books in Week 2.

The big difference this week in where the value rests is with a few of the popular 0-2 teams that are sitting at cheap prices. The public has been burned two weeks in a row by the Eagles, Colts and Ravens and they're ready to stick a fork in them forgetting about the reasons they were so high on them coming into the season.

The masses of public bettors are a fickle crew with their own “Zig-Zag Theory” that more times than not zags them out of a winning week. And the books know how to appeal to those public trends and reel them in like an unsuspecting trout. Sharps on the other hand, know the books' strategy and they take advantage of the numbers that have been over-modified and it's why you'll see them usually win when the books do.

The most shocking movement of a team rating from preseason to Week 3 is what has happened with the Eagles, who were bumped up almost three-points after blowing everyone out in the first three exhibition games. But after looking nothing like that preseason offensive monster in losses to Atlanta and Dallas, they're actually below the rating they started with in the preseason. It's a rapid adjustment and part of it is to handicap what the public is feeling, and right now they feel the Eagles are phony. They loved Philly the first two weeks, but they hate them now.

On the other side, you've got the Jets coming off an impressive win at Indianapolis on Monday night, and they get a bump up in the rating just because that defense figures to give plenty of teams problems all season long.

Last week the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook opened Philadelphia as a 3 ½-point road favorite against the Jets in their early lines. After Monday night's game, the Jets were -2.5 and down to -2 on Friday. That is a massive adjustment for just one week. And the public doesn't care as their parlay action is on the New York Jets.
