Las Vegas sports books have differing values on Osweiler worth

The new CG Technology sports book on first floor of the Cosmopolitan.
LAS VEGAS -- The Super Bowl champion Broncos worst case scenario for the 2016 season was realized on Wednesday when QB Brock Osweiler signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Texans, just two days after Peyton Manning announced his retirement. With the most important position on the field being a huge question mark now for Denver, a few Las Vegas sports books made some adjustments on their futures.

"We're moving the Broncos from 15-to-1 to win the Super Bowl up to 25-to-1 and we're dropping the Texans from 40-to-1 down to 20-to-1," said Wynn sports book director John Avello. "It's a significant blow to the Broncos chances, and a huge upgrade for Houston. Their (Texans) QB play was awful last year and Osweiler could be their missing piece. They've got the coach, the defense and now they got a QB."

Houston's defense kept it in most games last season, seven of which it allowed opponents to score 10 points or fewer. The Texans also bolstered their running game by signing RB Lamar Miller from Miami to a four-year, $26 million deal.

The Broncos have more trouble ahead. They already lost DT Malik Jackson to Jacksonville which will weaken its No. 1 ranked defense from last year. Linebackers Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall and DB Omar Bolden could be next to depart to the highest bidders. The offense could be in trouble even further as RBs Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson are free agents. Starting TE Owen Daniels was also cut.

Despite the movement, and more that will happen, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook didn't make any changes to their Super Bowl odds.

Super Bowl 50 Prop Selections from Las Vegas

CG Technology sports book inside Legasse's Stadium at Palazzo.
Most Las Vegas sports books are offering more than 300 props for Super Bowl 50, so we thought we‘d offer opinions on a few of them that have short prices. Some of the choices are based on the belief that Denver will win a close, low scoring game, but others could go either way no matter the outcome.

There is nothing quite like the betting intensity that comes with watching the Super Bowl while having multiple wagers on everything that happens throughout the game. Betting on just the outcome of who will win is almost boring and rather ordinary. Make it truly a super experience and get in on some of the additional fun. So let's take a look:

Cam Newton Rushing Yards: OVER 38.5 -115 (CG Technology)
He’s had 45 yards or more rushing in five of his last eight games and if the Broncos defense rattles him as much as we think they will, he’ll be more apt to try and do some things on his own to make something happen. In the 20-13 loss at Atlanta during Week 16, where he was kept on the sidelines for 35 minutes watching the Falcons ball control offense, he ran eight times for 45 yards. Even if we’re wrong with Denver being successful at ball control and the Panthers win, Newton is still likely to take off a few times to help solidify his MVP chances.

Cam Newton Rushing Attempts: OVER 8.5 -130 (CG Technology)
He went OVER 8.5 in 10 of his 18 games this season, including both playoff games. For much of the same reasons with the rushing yards, look for him to reach double figures here.

Will Cam Newton Score a Rushing Touchdown: YES +120 (Westgate SuperBook)
Even though we think Denver’s defense will give him fits, we do think he’ll find his way into the end zone, something he did 12 times on the ground during the regular season and playoffs. He‘s scored five rushing touchdowns in his past four games. Most of all, he loves the spotlight of scoring and an opportunity to do a Super Bowl dance of some kind, which he’s probably been choreographing for the last two weeks.

Super Bowl 50 Betting Update from Las Vegas: Big Broncos wager taken

Where is the betting number going to roll?
Update - 1.30.16 - 9:05 p.m. ET

Wynn sports book director John Avello said earlier in the week that he was looking for a sign that Broncos money was out there and when he moved the Panthers from -5.5 to -6 on Friday, he got that sign with a Denver wager he described as a high six-figure wager. The wager pushed the Wynn book back to -5.5 on Saturday afternoon.

"There's still a long ways to go -- we'll take 80 percent of overall wagers on the game Saturday and Sunday, " said Avello. "We're still long on the Panthers right now, but it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see our position completely change from the first week. It happened last year."
The public is still loving the Panthers, but the frenzied pace seen when the number was first posted has leveled off. Like Avello said, there is a long ways to go and things could change drastically. It's apparent that some large money is willing to show their hand with Denver and +6 is acceptable. Other sharp outfits are still hoping +6.5 or +7 shows.

A solid indicator that Broncos money is still out there waiting is the action the South Pointtook on the Broncos money-line that dropped them from +215 to +180 (Panthers now -125). At the time, +215 was the highest price available in Las Vegas. Several books still have the Broncos at +200.

If looking to play the Broncos, it's quite possible that +6 may be the best number you'll find. We'll keep following this story all the way till kickoff.

Cardinals-Panthers action dead, Patriots bet at 10-to-1 ratio

Bettors loving the Patriots this week despite inflated number.
LAS VEGAS -- When the AFC and NFC Championship Game lines were both posted with 3's in Las Vegas on Sunday, one game looked out of whack with a road favorite while the other looked solid. Many observers thought it would the Panthers side that would attract the most action, but that hasn't been the case.

"It's been a dead game for us," said South Point sports book director Bert Osborne who has kept Carolina -3 all week.

Osborne said public parlay money has favored Carolina as expected, but the game he's been keeping his eye on the most is the Patriots -3 at Denver.

"I thought the game that we'd be moving first would be the Panthers, but the way the action is going so far I may have to go to -3.5 with the Patriots."

The number '3' is the most key number in the NFL, so it'll take some heavy one-sided action to move off the number, but Osborne can see it happening. "Right now, I'm about a 25 percent towards our threshold at the number before moving to 3.5."

Osborne says he takes about four times the limit at -3 than he does for regular numbers before moving off it. His chain of sports books are the only ones in the city that use flat numbers exclusively.

On Friday, the South Point was the only sports book in town with the Patriots at 3-flat. Those that like the Patriots know where to go so it might not be too long before Osborne hits his threshold forcing a number change.

2016 AFC Championship Game: Patriots -3 (EV) at Broncos

Tom Brady LOVES pressure; faces No. 1 defense with No. 1 sack total
3:05 pm ET - TV: CBS
New England (13-4, 8-7-2 ATS) at Denver (13-4, 8-8-1 ATS)
Line: New England -3 (-120), 44

LAS VEGAS -- Let’s just start by saying that ratings-wise, the Broncos should be favored. That’s simply the approach from an oddsmaker position where we don’t believe the Patriots are 6-points better than Denver, and that’s what the number is telling us if taking out the 3-points for Denver’s home field.

However, bookmakers need to factor in public perception. The additional rating points added to New England for the AFC Championship Game are because of the public, which always believes what it saw last.

The books have to forecast who is going to be bet the most and go against the oddsmaker position, especially in games with such high volume. Sharp money pales in comparison to the amount Joe Public throws down on these games. And so far the books look to be right — 75 percent of bets have come in on the Pats -3.

But that doesn’t mean we have to follow the herd at the bet windows. You’re looking at nearly 5-points of value by taking the Broncos at home, which is one of the best home field advantages in NFL history. The home field for Denver has been so good through the years that the great Tom Brady is only 2-6 when playing in the Rockies, and his two wins came against third-stringer Danny Kanell and Tim Tebow.

To show the Patriots' huge ratings increase after last week, let’s take a look at a few recent games with similar spreads.

Sunday NFL Divisional Playoffs Selections

Crazy seeing Seattle getting points, even though Carolina is 15-1..
LAS VEGAS — When my partner Kenny White and I discussed the divisional round games, we were most excited about Sunday's. There are so many intriguing storylines in both, and perhaps the most interesting is yet to be written — Ben Roethlisberger’s shoulder. Will he play, and if so, how well? The spread is waiting in limbo at most sports books as his status is important to the number.

The Seahawks have kicked it into high gear, just like last season, but as Carolina showed during its come from behind regular season win at Seattle, some of the intimidation factor of five straight Seattle wins against them might be over.

Then we’ve got Peyton Manning returning to the starting lineup in a home game, a situation where he was a disappointing 1-2 the past three years in Denver when we knew he was good to go. He had 17 ugly interceptions this season to only nine TD passes. Maybe it was always about his foot. Maybe not.

Crazy stuff happens when the night falls on Denver in January, which makes the nightcap the perfect setting to end the weekend. Images of Ike Taylor grasping for Demaryius Thomas’ jersey after a catching a Tim Tebow laser to win the 2011 wild-card game is just one of the many classic examples. At the end of the 2005 season, a young Roethlisberger led sixth-seeded Pittsburgh to an AFC Championship win at Denver and then won the Super Bowl.

MORE: Full Saturday selections from The Linemakers

Pittsburgh and Denver have met seven times in the playoffs (Denver 4-3) with the eventual winner of the game going to the Super Bowl five times.

Our theme this week is riding the teasers in all the games. Let’s take a look at Sunday’s action.

Betting Public Down on Broncos for 2015

Say what you will, but Manning is tough -- plays every game.
LAS VEGAS -- The Seahawks (9/2) and Packers (6/1) from the NFC still remain the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook favorites to win Super Bowl 50 and the Patriots and Colts are each 8-to-1 out of the AFC, and lots has been written about them as the top contenders as the first week of the NFL approaches.

Surprisingly, little is being said about the Broncos as contenders, which comes as surprise since they’ve been public darlings the past three seasons.

Obviously, the first major question people have about Denver surrounds Peyton Manning as he enters his 18th season. The 39-year old didn’t look so great in preseason, and didn’t do anything to deter questions about his arm strength. He’s also wearing a glove on his throwing hand for grip because he’s got numbness in his fingers due to the four neck surgeries.

Yes, there are plenty of questions surrounding Manning, but hasn’t that always been the case with him during his first three seasons with Denver?

He’s always been old and the potential for injury has always been there. Some thought he wouldn’t make it through his first season because of the neck injury, but not only did he play all 16 games that year, he would start every game the next two seasons. All he did in those three seasons was lead Denver to a 38-10 regular season record with three division titles and home field throughout the playoffs twice. His arm has never been a cannon, either, and he rarely gets sacked -- only 17 times last season.

So why the skepticism now after being public favorites the past three seasons?

“I think it was their performance late last season, particularly with Manning struggling, and then losing the way they did at home to the Colts in the playoffs that changed a lot of perception.” said SuperBook vice-president Jay Kornegay, who happens to be a die-hard Broncos fan.

Roberts Week 8 NFL Plays: Broncos Bounce Back Big in London

Here are my NFL Picks for the Week. I'll have a write-up posted Saturday night on why I like the selections, but the bets are in (most anyway), so here's who I got:

Broncos +2 ½ vs. 49ers
Broncos +120 ML vs. 49ers
Broncos/49ers OVER 41 ½
Cowboys -6 ½ vs. Jaguars
Chiefs -7 ½ vs. Bills
Packers +6 @ NY Jets
Texans +6 @ Colts ( will bet Monday for best line)*
Texans +210 ML @ Colts (will bet Monday for best line)*

* The best value on this game if liking Houston is to wait until Monday morning when all of Sunday’s final parlay liability is figured into Monday’s what-if scenarios. The Colts are a huge public team and the extended risk for each sports book on them will be much higher than the Texans which will force a move to -6 ½ or -7 by game time.

I have a few more I like for smaller unit plays which I'll include Saturday as well.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: Kyle Orton's Stock Rising As He Continues To Play Well

By Micah Roberts
Las Vegas Review-Journal

One of the biggest questions coming into the season for the Denver Broncos was how the offense would make up for the loss of wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Losing a playmaker who caught more than 100 passes in each of the past three seasons was perceived by many as making the team weaker, with a rough 2010 in store. However, the transition of life after Marshall has been smooth and in some ways makes the Broncos more dangerous thanks to the improved play of quarterback Kyle Orton.
Many fantasy owners passed over Orton until late in their drafts with the modest goal of hoping he could have a decent game in the weeks their starting quarterbacks had byes. But with the way Orton looked throughout the preseason and the first two weeks of the regular season, he's going to be pressing many owners into starting him sooner than those bye weeks.

Through two games, only five quarterbacks have more than Orton's 602 yards passing and a rating higher than his 103.9. He's also tied for eighth in the NFL with 46 completions and has thrown three touchdowns with only one interception. While NFL ratings don't necessarily equate to fantasy points, it does show that Orton is moving the ball efficiently, which has equated to the team having success on offense.

Orton's evolution began last season, when he jelled quickly with first-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels' passing scheme. Despite the tough task of taking over for the popular Jay Cutler, Orton still completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 3,802 yards and 21 touchdowns, with only 12 interceptions. He wasn't flashy and didn't produce any huge fantasy totals for any one game, but he was a consistent earner.

This year during the preseason, there was a considerable change in Orton. He had a confident swagger and for the first time in his career had the look of being an NFL quarterback who truly was in charge. His passes were crisper than ever, and he carried that attitude through the Broncos' first two regular-season games.

The beneficiary of Orton's rise in confidence is a nice group of underrated receivers who many fantasy owners still are trying to gauge. The offensive system has plenty of balls going around, but the passes are going to several receivers rather than the big bulk that went to Marshall last year. Eddie Royal leads the team with 13 receptions, but rookie first-round draft pick Demaryius Thomas looks to be one who should flourish the most, and he's available in several fantasy leagues.

Thomas fell under the radar because no one saw him play. A broken foot kept the former Georgia Tech star out of the preseason, and he missed Denver's season opener at Jacksonville. But in Week 2, everyone saw what he was capable of by catching eight passes in nine targets for 97 yards and a touchdown. With the way the 6-foot-3-inch, 229-pound rookie caught a few of Orton's passes Sunday against the Seahawks, you couldn't help but think of the similarities between him and Marshall.

Thomas has played only one game, but with the way Orton looks and the potential Thomas brings, he is a must-buy this week and could be used immediately as your No. 3 wide receiver.

As for Orton, this might be the week to give him a shot in the starting lineup in what looks to be a high-scoring home game against the Colts. By no means should you rest one of the elite quarterbacks, but if you have the likes of Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb, Joe Flacco, Eli Manning or worse, Orton could be an upgrade in Week 3.

■ SAINTS RUNNING BACKS -- With Reggie Bush expected to miss up to six weeks because of a broken leg, someone is going to have to fill his role in New Orleans' offense.
History has shown that the Saints hardly miss a beat offensively without him. In the 12 games Bush has missed during his career, the Saints have gone 8-4 and averaged 33.3 points a game with others filling his role. The candidates to keep an eye on this week are Ladell Betts and rookie Chris Ivory.

■ BILLS' LYNCH -- Marshawn Lynch has been a popular buy this week because of rumors that the Packers might have interest in trading for the Bills back. If Brandon Jackson doesn't work out in the next few weeks as Ryan Grant's replacement, the rumors could become reality. Lynch's style of running is similar to Grant's, and he would be a great replacement if the trade happens. The possibilities are worth taking the gamble on Lynch now.

Broncos Have All Kinds of Injury Issues Heading To Jacksonville For Opener

Associated Press
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels set out to renovate his offensive line and rejuvenate his running backs corps this season.
An injury epidemic at Dove Valley has left both groups in a state of flux.
"Nobody is going to put the season on hold for us until we get ready to go," McDaniels said Tuesday. "We'll try to practice as much as we can with the group that's going to play on Sunday."When the Broncos open their season Sunday at Jacksonville, they could feature three players on the offensive line taking their first NFL snaps while blocking for a backfield of backups.
If right tackle Ryan Harris' sprained left ankle doesn't heal fast enough, the Broncos' starting offensive line looks like it will include first-year pro Stanley Daniels, who has been cut four times, at left guard and rookies J.D. Walton at center andZane Beadles at right tackle.
"Those are question marks to people outside the locker room, but not concerns for us," right guard Chris Kuper insisted. "We have confidence in everybody here."
Walton shrugged off the notion of having too many green guys getting their first taste of the NFL all at once. "You have to take your first snap sometime," he said.
Even the veteran O-line starters -- Kuper (ankle) and All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady (knee) -- spent much of camp in the trainer's room. Clady returned to action last week, less than six months after blowing out his left knee.

Broncos Top Two RBs Hurt in First Day of Training Camp

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter have both been injured on the Broncos' first day of training camp.

Moreno was carted off the field after hurting his right leg Sunday, and Buckhalter injured his left leg minutes later.

The Denver Post, citing unnamed sources, reported that Moreno suffered a serious right hamstring injury, while Buckhalter pulled his upper back.

About an hour into the workout, Moreno caught a pass in 7-on-7 drills and turned upfield when his leg buckled. He grimaced as he hopped into the team's headquarters for tests. Moreno could miss the rest of camp, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team hadn't confirmed the injury.

Buckhalter hurt his leg about 10 minutes later during the same drill and limped off on his own.

Broncos 1st Round Draft Picks, Thomas and Tebow, Miss Second Straight Day of Camp

by Mike Chambers
Denver Post

Unsigned first-round draft picks Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow missed their second consecutive workouts at the Broncos' training camp this morning.

Without a contract, Thomas and Tebow cannot participate in training camp. The rookie portion of camp continues this afternoon and ends Friday morning. Thomas and Tebow won't be considered holdouts until training camp officially begins Sunday.
Thomas, a wide receiver from Georgia Tech, was selected No. 22 overall, three spots ahead of Tebow, the popular Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Florida.

"Nothing to report," Denver coach Josh McDaniels said of negotiations with Thomas and Tebow and their agents. "We're still working away at it."

McDaniels said he spoke to both players Tuesday at the team complex, and he wouldn't be surprised to see them again this afternoon, and under contract.

"I think they'll always be a chance," McDaniels said of completing the deals today. "Hopefully it's closer than not close, and as soon as we can tie the knot we'll get them over here, run the conditioning tests and do all that stuff. Like I said (Wednesday), we're working on it as much as we can and (trying) to get them here as quickly as possible."

Mike T's Week 16 Dogs: An Amazing 29-16 Record on the Season

by Mike T.

For some reason every few weeks I drift away from what has done so well for me all year (picking dogs). For the fisrt time in a while I fell below the .667 mark for the season (29-16). I had Dallas over the Saints and then went with two favs and neither got there. The Jets couldn't make a FG (0-3) and the Seahawks just didn't bother to show up for work on Sunday. Well it's back to the drawing board.

Broncos +7 at Eagles
Denver travels to Philly to take on a very hot (5-0) Eagle team. Philly has been known to make big plays in the air but not produce much when it comes to the ground game. This plays right into the Broncos hands as they are one of the top pass defenses in football. Denver should be able to find a way to control the insanely talented Desean Jackson. He's been a spooky nightmare for DBs all year. The Broncos secondary is one of the best in the business though. That along with some pressure on McNabb from Dumervil might make it tough for the Eagles to put up enough points to win.
Broncos 20 Eagles 17

Jets +5.5 at Colts
Yes, I'm going to take another stab at the Jets this week. The Colts have 25 guys listed on their injury report (10 of which are questionable or worse). The Jets are relatively healthy (few guys probable). Every week the Colts find some magical way to win. Maybe that magic wears off a little this week.
Like the Broncos vs Philly, the Jets and their number one defense should match up well against this very talented but banged up Colts offense. With Pierre Garcon out and shut down corner Darrelle Revis on Reggie Wayne the Colts O shouldn't be able to score at will as we've seen them do all year. The Jets hand the undefeated Colts their first loss.
Jets 28 Colts 24

Redskins +7 vs Dallas
This to me seems like one of those spots I love to take. Kind of like Oak over Cin or even Dallas over N.O. last week. The Cowboys beat the undefeated Saints on the road while the Skins got crushed by the Giants last week. As expected the public is all over the Boys. These two teams played each other just a month ago in Dallas and the Skins had them shut out for 58 minutes only to lose a 7-6 heart breaker on the final drive. These two teams despise each other and regardless of their record if I can get a 7 pt home dog in this match up I'll take it every time.
Redskins 22 Cowboys 21

Happy Thanksgiving: Three Roberts Plays for Thursday & Only One Favorite

Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone out there and hopefully I can help to get some smiling turkey on your face before the rush comes in. Don't sweat the in-laws and don't sweat the poor carving. Hopefully after the Cowboys game, you're sitting nice waiting on the Broncos to come in for either a money line play or winning on the points.

Here are three games I'm looking at for the Holiday weekend. Should those games get there, it won't be a Happy holliday for many bettors, but every bookmaker in the world will show a profit. Usually the player gets there on Thanksgiving, but let's not hope this week, unless you're the Player.

Green Bay -11 @ Detroit
Oakland +13.5 @ Dallas
Denver +7 vs Giants

Roberts Week 9 Pro Football Picks: Panthers Could Be Upset Of The Year

Cardinals +3 @ Bears: Arizona falls into that category of being to win anywhere, as we a couple weeks ago at New York, and also being able to lose to anyone like we saw last week in their home game against the Panthers.

They may seem like a risky bet, but this is more about going against the Bears who are still trying to figure out their identity with Jay Cutler at the helm. Last week they went to their running game for the first time all season with Matt Forte and didn't let Cutler's interceptions beat them.

This week, they'll get a team who can put points on the board and be forced to use Cutler's turnover machine.

Panthers +13 @ Saints: Why even mess around the Saints? Well, getting four-points of value is a good beginning to the answer. The proper line should be around 9 or 10 at most, but is inflated because of Las Vegas' current losses with bad teams and lovable favorites like the Saints and Colts.

The Panthers have also owned this team over the last four years winning 7 of 8 games. Jake Delhomme should be happier than ever going to his home and getting some good luck Gumbo where he has had some of his best games. In his last 5 games against the Saints he's had 8 TD's and only one pick.

The power running game of the Panthers will not be stopped by the Saints who haven't been put to the test for four quarters against a good running team. The Dolphins had them on the ropes, but let them off the hook with bad play calling in the second half. If the Saints had trouble with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, then they're really going to love Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams.

Not only is the points good value here, but a money line play at +600 is worth a shot.

Dallas-Philadelaphia OVER 49: The last two seasons these two teams have had shootouts in their first meeting. The game has gone over 50 in 3 of the last 4 games. The best sign is that the game is in November where Tony Romo is virtually unbeatable and has his best games statistically throughout his career. If there was a November Hall of Fame, Romo's picture would be the silhouette on the logo.

No worries about Philly scoring either. Donovan McNabb and DeSean Jackson like to make bigsplays with regularity and with Dallas' weak coverage and suddenly meek pass-rush, they should score big again.

Denver +3 vs Pittsburgh: Everyone knew the Broncos were phony and they proved it at Baltimore, or so the experts are claiming. Doesn't matter that they beat Dallas, New England, and San Diego in a Monday night road game, does it? Those were flukes, and a team like the World Champion Steelers will expose them further, right?

The same argument was made the last time the Steelers had just won the Super Bowl. They strolled into Denver as 3-point road favorites and got beat straight up.

Denver's lapse last week was a mere matter of a team coming off a bye, traveling from the west to play and early game in the east. Western teams traveling east very rarely fare well, no matter what a teams record is. Starting out 6-0 and then having to wait two weeks killed some momentum, but the buildings blocks that got them big wins are still there.

The home crowd will make a huge difference and Denver will win straight up again as a dog like they have done four times already this season.
