Broncos-Patriots Most Bet Game of Week 5; Great two-way action

Sports Books will be busy all weekend with Broncos-Patriots action
By Micah Roberts
Sporting News

LAS VEGAS—When Cantor Gaming sports books in Las Vegas opened their early lines for each week of the 2012 NFL season back in May, the Week 5 matchup between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots got plenty of attention from the betting public. Five months later, nothing has changed. It’s still one of the most eagerly anticipated games among bettors in this young season.

“The Broncos-Patriots game will be the most bet game of the week,” said Cantor Gaming sports book director Mike Colbert. “We’re seeing great two-way action on it so far, and it already has a larger amount written on it than what we usually see from big games at this stage for the big weekend push.”

Colbert astutely had the Patriots installed as 7-point favorites back in May, a number he re-posted when they opened betting on the game last Sunday night.

“We opened the game Patriots -7, took a few big Broncos bets at +7, and have been dealing -6.5 all week, which looks to be the right number. I don’t think we’ll see it move up or down. Both teams are public favorites, which should keep us pretty balanced right up until kickoff.”

The excitement at the bet windows is attributed to Payton Manning and Tom Brady—who have set the gold standard over the last decade as to what an NFL quarterback should be—squaring off once again. Over their careers against each other, Brady has holds an 8-4 mark, including winning the first six against Manning. But Manning has had the most recent success, winning four of their past six meetings.

Mike T's Week 4 Picks - Time To Pick on The Patriots Defense Again

by Mike T.

Panthers @ Saints Over 44.5
The Saints shouldn't have a problem throwing against the Panthers secondary and I doubt they have a tough time getting in the endzone. I also expect the Panthers to get a few big runs on the Saints defense while the game is still close.
Saints 35 Panthers 21

Steelers money line -135 vs Ravens
I like the Steelers at home and layed the 135 as opposed to laying 2.5 -120, just too much value there. I basically bought 2.5 points for 15 cents. The Ravens had had a tough time scoring so far and now face the best defense on the road. I don't expect the Steelers to light it up either but I do like them to win the turnover battle.
Steelers 16 Ravens 14

Dolphins +1 vs Patriots
As I wrote in week 1 the Patriots defense is not going to be very good this year. This is especially true in the 2nd half( keep that in mind if think you can find a good halftime line against the Pats all year). They are young and not very deep. I think the Dolphins keep this one close in the first half and run away with it in the second.
Dolphins 31 Patriots 20

I also took a little Jaguars +7 and the Redskins +6 as well as taking them in a small money line parlay.

Brett Favre and Drama Reach New Heights; Saints-Vikings Game Middled in Las Vegas

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

It was a little over a month ago when everyone was wondering what was going to happen with the Brett Favre saga in Minnesota. Would he stay, or would he go? The Las Vegas sportsbooks played the game along the way, as Favre’s decision was unknown through multiple false reports of his intentions, adjusting a week one opening line that opened as far back as Apr. 29 with the Super Bowl champion Saints being a solid four-point home favorite to the Vikings in a rematch of the NFC title game.

The line got as high as 6 ½-points at many books as they bobbed and weaved through all the smoke signals and tweets of misinformation until finally settling at 4 ½ leading into this week. The public money came in support of the Saints early in the week with enough cash cumulatively to count for a worthy move to 5 and eventually 5 ½ by Wednesday.

Moving to 5 and 5 ½ was easy an easy move according to any standard bookmaking text because those are the deadest of all numbers. The loneliest of numbers in NFL margin of victory from one through eight is 5. In traditional bookmaking philosophy, because the number is so dead, it doesn’t even take a full limit wager to move off the number. It’s almost like if the tidal wave of action is coming -- which it looked like -- then get closer to -6 and let them lay that.

That standard bookmaking gets thrown out the window when a team misses an extra-point in a low-scoring game and then the same top drafted fantasy football kicker misses two easy field-goals. That’s exactly what happened in Thursday night’s kickoff to the 2010 NFL season when the Saints won by the deadest of all numbers, five, in a 14-9 victory over the Vikings.

Once the sportsbooks all got to -5 ½, the sharp Viking money started coming in almost as if they knew the number was key in this instance as opposed to all other games when it does mean nothing. Most of the books around town closed at -4 ½ or 5, but surprisingly even with most of the shops getting middled somewhat, the books still made out well because the total didn’t come close to going over the posted number of 48 ½, which basically eliminated a large portion of parlays.

By eliminating the predominant parlays heading into the weekend with either Vikings or Saints to the over, all the those funds tied to the 'over' into Sunday’s games went to the house. The only folks who made out collectively were the sharps.

Some of the risk that is still active lies with ties-win parlay cards where most of the city settled on the supposed dead number of “5” which is now active on both sides going into this weekend's college and pro football games. Bettors who played parlays off the board at -5 will get a push and reduce down, but nevertheless, they are still active as well which isn’t good for house since this was the most bet game of the week.

The Vegas sports ooks may have cashed in pretty large today despite the sharps siding them, but there is still considerable risk due to the results which will weigh heavily on the weekend decision. Should the likes of the Colts, Titans, Packers, Cowboys and Dolphins cover Sunday, the final losing tally for the books heading into Monday will be more than doubled what it would have been had there been a 3 or 7-point decision on Thursday night’s Saints game.

In more ways than ever thought, even from a betting perspective, Brett Favre brings drama to the table like no other.

Broncos Have All Kinds of Injury Issues Heading To Jacksonville For Opener

Associated Press
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels set out to renovate his offensive line and rejuvenate his running backs corps this season.
An injury epidemic at Dove Valley has left both groups in a state of flux.
"Nobody is going to put the season on hold for us until we get ready to go," McDaniels said Tuesday. "We'll try to practice as much as we can with the group that's going to play on Sunday."When the Broncos open their season Sunday at Jacksonville, they could feature three players on the offensive line taking their first NFL snaps while blocking for a backfield of backups.
If right tackle Ryan Harris' sprained left ankle doesn't heal fast enough, the Broncos' starting offensive line looks like it will include first-year pro Stanley Daniels, who has been cut four times, at left guard and rookies J.D. Walton at center andZane Beadles at right tackle.
"Those are question marks to people outside the locker room, but not concerns for us," right guard Chris Kuper insisted. "We have confidence in everybody here."
Walton shrugged off the notion of having too many green guys getting their first taste of the NFL all at once. "You have to take your first snap sometime," he said.
Even the veteran O-line starters -- Kuper (ankle) and All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady (knee) -- spent much of camp in the trainer's room. Clady returned to action last week, less than six months after blowing out his left knee.

Kenny White's Las Vegas Odds-makers College Football Rankings

By Chris David
VegasInsider.com

Alabama finished No. 1 in last year’s Las Vegas Rankings, and Nick Saban’s team has been put into the top spot once again.
Kenny White, former Chief Operating Officer of Las Vegas Sports Consultants, not only believes that ‘Bama is the team to beat but the SEC is the deepest conference once again as well. In this year’s preseason rankings, the powerhouse conference has seven of the 30 schools in the 2010 preseason rankings.

The next group that has received respect from White is the ACC, who has six schools listed in the Top 30. However, it should be noted that Miami, Fl. is only ranked 10th. Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech are right behind the Hurricanes in the 11th position.
Southern California won’t be bowling this season, but gamblers can still bet on the Trojans and the folks in the desert still have them on their radar. USC is ranked eighth in the preseason rankings and is one of five Pac 10 schools listed in the poll.
The Big 10 and Big 12 both have four schools in the Top 30, plus the two conferences make up three of the first five. Some pundits could make a case for Oklahoma (3), Ohio State(4) and Texas (5), since they’re only separated by decimal points in terms of White’s power ratings.
Of the six Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conferences, the Big East is the weakest when viewing the preseason rankings. We will get to find out how good Pittsburgh (26) is early when it faces Utah in Week 1 from Salt Lake City before hosting the aforementioned Hurricanes on Sept. 23.
Mid-majors don’t garner a lot of respect as a whole, but TCU (6) and Boise State (7) are legit contenders and the oddsmakers recognize the pair. Despite losing to the Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl last year, some bettors might be surprised that the Horned Frogs still have a superior rating from White. a
