Friday MLB Play of Day: Texas Rangers at Houton Astros - 8:10 pm ET

Dallas Keuchel has had a rough go of it lately, especially against Texas.
Lefties square off at Minute Maid Park

Martin Perez (7-7, 4.22 ERA) doesn't like the road too much and Texas has gone 5-12 in their last 17 games overall, but I like what I saw out of Perez in his last start that helped me forget his miserable previous four starts. He allowed only one run to KC in seven innings. Texas has now won 10 of his past 13 starts.

The last time the Rangers (63-46) were in Texas in May, they swept. They won eight straight against the Astros until losing June 8. Overall, Texas is 9-1 against them in 2016. It's basically the differential between the Rangers being in first and the Astros 6.5 games back. One more note: the Rangers are 30-16 in the last 46 meetings at Minute Maid Park.

Houston has lost its last three games started by Dallas Keuchel (6-11, 4.92), including his last start at Detroit where he gave up seven runs. Houston (56-52) is 2-8 in their last 10 and and have lost its last three. Oh yeah, Keuchel has lost all three starts against Texas this year.

Let's go with the Rangers to win in a high scoring game. The top play here is Texas (+156) and a secondary play is on the OVER (8.5).

MLB Weekend Series Prices and Selections

Angels have lost eight straight to Houston, but are on 6-game win streak.
The Aliante sports book in Las Vegas has posted odds on the 11 baseball series that begin Friday night, so let's jump right in and see where the best value might be presented based on recent trends and pitchers scheduled to start.

Phillies (+240) at Pirates (-300)
Rotation: Eflin/Cole, Nola/Glasnow, Velasquez/Taillon
Notes: The Pirates are only three games out of a wild card spot and have to take advantage of teams like Philly if they want postseason play for the fourth straight year. They've won 11 of the past 14 meetings including a sweep at PNC Park in June.
Series pick: Pirates

Padres (+320) at Nationals (-400)
Rotation: Perdoma/Roark, Jackson/Scherzer, Friedrich/undecided
Notes: These teams split a four-game series in San Diego last month with all four games going OVER the total. Washington should get a quick leg up on the series Friday behind Tanner Roark. The Nats have won eight of his last nine starts, including the last four. The Padres have lost seven of their last 10 at Nationals Park.
Series pick: Nationals

Diamondbacks (+105) at Reds (-125)
Rotation: Bradley/Straily, Ray/Sampson, Godley/Finnegan
Notes: Arizona has lost 15 of its last 19 games while the Reds have won four of six during their current homestand, winning series against Milwaukee and Atlanta. The only positive for Arizona this weekend is being on the road where they are 23-20 (+8.6 units). Still, the D'Backs have packed it in. Arizona's best shot at a win will be Saturday behind Robbie Ray.
Series pick: Reds

Las Vegas Sports Books Buried with Cavs Game 7 Win

The Cavaliers stopped by Las Vegas to party Sunday night after Game 7.
The rally cry for Cleveland fans over the past 52 years of trying to win a championship of any kind has been “We Believe.” There may have been no better proof of fans believing in the Cavaliers than what happened in Las Vegas sportsbooks Sunday night for Game 7 of the NBA Finals when they emphatically put their money on the counter.

The Cavaliers’ 93-89 win over the Warriors made most Las Vegas sportsbooks big losers on the day with a combination of payouts taking the Cavs +5, +150 on the moneyline and a variation of series prices with a high of 10-to-1 odds after Game 4 when the Cavs were down 3-1.

Despite the media constantly questioning LeBron James’ legacy following a Game 4 loss, the fans and bettors believed enough in the Cavs to make the books losers in Games 5, 6 and 7.

“It wasn’t a good day for us at all,” said MGM Resorts sportsbook hub manager Jeff Stoneback. “We had a bunch of house players take the Cavs (+5) with six figure wagers and then we had that big loss on the series price after Game 4.”

Last week Stoneback said after Game 4 that his books had taken over $100,000 in risk on the Cavs to win the series at 10-to-1 odds. Before Games 5 and 6, he tried to offer the lowest series price on the Warriors in town, but no one wanted them and kept betting the bad price on the Cavs.

No team had ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals, but the Cavs fans believed and put their money where their hearts were and cashed big time Sunday night.

Station Casinos sportsbook director Jason McCormick said they escaped with a small win on Game 7 just because the game stayed UNDER (206) the total, but said they got “beat up pretty good on the series.”

CG Technology’s VP of risk management Jason Simbal said they lost on both the game and series. Westgate SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay said, “We needed Golden State in Game 7 for almost everything. It wasn’t a knockout punch, but it was a solid jab.”

The scene at the Mirage sportsbook prior to Game 7 was something that kind of shocked Stoneback.

“I’ve never seen a crowd so big for an NBA game, ever,” said Stoneback who has worked in Vegas books for 28 years. “It was standing room only, a massive crowd. We had every seat taken in the room an hour-and-half before the game. Never seen that before – all the bleachers along the side and couches were occupied hours before the game.”

2016 NBA Finals Game 1 Action Report from Las Vegas

Cavs took the Warriors to 6 games in 2015 Finals without Irving and Love.
LAS VEGAS -- Bettors have a dilemma on their hands for Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight. Do they ride with a healthy Cavaliers team that won its first 10 playoff games, or do they they side with the suddenly hot Warriors, who won three straight to close out the Western Conference Finals after being down 3-1 to the Thunder, which included two embarrassing defeats.

With three full days of action across Las Vegas sports books, the public appears to be siding with the defending champs, but there's almost an equal mixture numbers available with the Warriors posted as -5.5 to 6-point favorites.

William Hill sports books opened the Warriors Monday night as 5.5-point favorites and the number stood still until Wednesday morning when they moved to -6, but the move wasn't necessarily based on action.

"We're dead even so far," William Hill's head oddsmaker Nick Bogdanvich said Thursday morning. "We're a little high on the OVER (208.5), but overall on the game we're balanced. The area we're buried on is the series price with everyone jumping on Cleveland. We have the lowest price with Golden State at -200 and no one is touching them."

Just as Bogdanovich was discussing the series action, he was miffed as he saw another wager light up the screen from one of his 105 locations across the state.

"Here comes another one. Another large wager on the Cavs to win the series and they're taking the worst price in town."

Three bets for the 2016 MLB season

Zack Greinke had sensational spring for Arizona.
Arizona Diamondbacks (Over 82)

You never want to put too much emphasis on what happened during spring training, but it’s hard not to be impressed with what the Diamondbacks have done in Cactus League play. There were lots of questions heading into March, and many of those were answered in such a satisfactory mode that Arizona now appears to be the best team in the National League West, which makes taking 5-1 odds to win the division attractive.

The Diamondbacks’ big move was getting one of baseball’s elite starters, Zack Greinke, to anchor the rotation. Another significant move was trading for Shelby Miller to be the No. 2 starter. The hard-throwing Miller was 6-17 with Atlanta last season, but he got little support from the lowest-scoring team in baseball in Atlanta. He allowed two or fewer runs in 22 of his 33 starts, pitched two shutouts and finished with a 3.02 ERA. Greinke and Miller had outstanding springs, and that 1-2 combination Arizona will throw every five days will help pile up lots of series wins throughout the season.

But what about the third starter? That was one of biggest questions, and Patrick Corbin came through with one of the best springs of any pitcher. Corbin missed the 2014 season after Tommy John surgery, but he’s looking better than before the injury. In five spring starts over 21 innings, Corbin allowed four earned runs (1.71 ERA) while striking out 24 and walking three.

Arizona’s hitting never was a question, but it cranked things up a couple of notches with a spring-leading .319 batting average while also running freely and stealing 34 bases. The combination of great starting pitching and hot hitting gave the Diamondbacks the best record in Cactus League while regularly blowing out opponents.

If buying the theory that Arizona will be contending for the division title and a playoff berth, then the ripple effect is the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, preseason NL West favorites, can be expected to play below expectations. The loss of Greinke will have a much larger effect on the Dodgers than most experts believe.

Las Vegas sports books do March Madness Prepatory

South Point sports book and casino will be hopping next week.
Las Vegas sports books get a nice dress rehearsal this week with the college basketball conference tournaments in preparation for next weekends NCAA Tournament, which might be the most stressful four consecutive days the book staff experiences during the entire year.

"It's certainly more challenging than the Super Bowl," said Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay. "It's the weekend where I tip my hat to all the ticket writers around town who feel the brunt of the pressure right up close, non-stop for 10 or 12 hours a day, four straight days."

Having dozens of games to work with each day through this weekend -- one after another just like next week -- gives the entire staff some practice so the onslaught of bettors next weekend isn't so overwhelming.

The pressure felt to get every wager taken in is felt from the ticket writer to the line supervisor to the bookmaker and then the director. It's a chain reaction and the books that do the best at this process are quite noticeable. The SuperBook is one of those.

"We have a veteran staff -- it's not their first time around, but it's still good to get acclimated a bit for the rush we'll see next week,' said Kornegay.

Communication with the staff and other departments is a big part of his process to be ready for next week.

Alabama or Clemson? Selection from Las Vegas

Las Vegas a fun place to watch championship games. Intense crowds.
LAS VEGAS -- There’s no question Alabama is the higher rated team in Monday’s national title game against Clemson, but is that rating gap really worth 6.5 points? According to Las Vegas oddsmaker Kenny White, the gap between the two teams is about half that number.

“Alabama’s played the better schedule in the SEC,” said White, “and Alabama’s the better team with the far better defense, but with the recent big wins by Clemson the disparity between the two closed to the point where, Alabama is rated only 3-points better (5-points better prior to ACC Championship). At the beginning of the season, the differential was 9-points.”

The added inflation to the number is sort of a luxury tax because sports books know the majority of the action will come on Alabama. Most books opened Alabama -7 just to see if they’d get some feelers taking the points, and some sharps did, which caused many to move to -7 (EVEN) or -6.5. William Hill’s 104 sports books across Nevada have taken 71 percent of the tickets written on Alabama, as well as 61 percent of the overall cash taken in.

Free College Football Picks: Iowa to continue its roll vs. Illinois

Illinois should have another rough day on road.
Line: Iowa -11
Total: 44
Time: 12 p.m. ET, ESPNU

The Hawkeyes have been a pleasant surprise so far at 5-0 (4-1 ATS), and there are a few trends to help sway the opinion that they keep their roll going at home on Saturday. The big one is Illinois being awful on the road. The Illini don't just lose, they rarely cover the spread, going 3-14 ATS in their last 17 road trips. Also, the home team in this series is 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings, and the favorite is 9-3 ATS in the past 12 meetings.

More important than the trends, Iowa's true rating might not have found them yet, which makes laying the points in this spot a good play.

Pick: Iowa - 11
Predicted score: Iowa 31-10

Free Week 5 College Football Selections: Roll Tide between Hedges

Alabama and Georgia last met in 2012 SEC Title game.
Line: Georgia -2, Total: 54.5
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Will Alabama really start SEC play at 0-2 for the first time since 1990?

Nick Saban has recruited better than anyone over the past few seasons, yet still can't manage to get a top-flight quarterback into the program, which cost them dearly against Ole Miss. The field-goal kicking game has also been struggling. However, what they do well is control the ground game, and they should be able to neutralize Georgia running back Nick Chubb and put all the pressure on QB Greyson Lambert, who has looked outstanding thus far, but against opponents not nearly as good as Alabama.

Alabama is an underdog for the first time in 72 games, but calling Georgia the favorite is subjective and based on how big a home-field edge you give the Bulldogs between the hedges. There's a big difference between home-field value against South Carolina and against Alabama. When the Tide rolls into town, cut their opponents’ home rating in half. So while you might give Georgia +6 at home against South Carolina, the advantage may be only +2 to +3 against Alabama. And we have Alabama rated about 4-points better than Georgia on a neutral field, so by this logic, Alabama should be -1 on Saturday.

Look for the line to drop, so if you're on board with Alabama, get all you can on the money-line as soon as possible.

Predicted score: Alabama 38-24
